Taylor Swift's 'Lover' Is Already 2019's Top-Selling Album in the U.S. After First Two Days on Sale

“Lover” has surpassed the “A Star Is Born” soundtrack to become 2019’s top-selling album stateside.

After its first two days out, Taylor Swift’s Lover has already become 2019’s top-selling album in the U.S., according to initial sales reports to Nielsen Music.

Released on Friday (Aug. 23), Lover’s sales approached 500,000 through its second day of release on Saturday. In turn, Lover has now passed the year-to-date sales of what was 2019’s top-seller, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack (444,000 sold through the week ending Aug. 22). Star was released in on Oct. 5, 2018, and has sold 1.148 million in total in the U.S.

In just 48 hours, Lover has the biggest sales week for any album since Swift’s own reputation sold 1.216 million copies in its first week and debuted at No. 1 on the Dec. 2, 2017-dated Billboard 200 chart.

U can't say she doesn't have a LOT of fans that'll scoop up ANYTHING she puts out. I wish Prince's(r.i.p.) & Janet fans were like this.

You're comparing a young current mainstream act to a couple of people who debuted in the 1970s? That's the equivalent of expecting Glenn Miller & The Andrews Sisters to sell a lot records in the mid-1980s. Young people in general don't buy their parents and especially not their grandparnets music. What actors from that time is still a big box office draw? Maybe Clint Eastwood, but not really anybody else. Taylor is a teen idol act on top of that, there's always some of them that is really popular during their era like Frankie Avalon, early Beatles, New Kids On The Block, Debbie Gibson, etc. NKOTB was outselling Prince in the late 1980s, even had sleeping bags and lamps you could buy. Are Madonna, Sting & Shaggy, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, O'Jays, David Crosby, Peabo Bryson and other veterans who have released albums in the last year or so, selling more than Taylor or Bruno Mars? Do they get the same amount of media coverage?

For 65 years straight, the #1 genre in music, selling wise, was rock n' roll worldwide. Last year (2017) in June, it got de-crowned by hip hop. Hip hop is the #1 genre. It's hip hop - rock - country - pop or pop - country. ~ Pras

Both Prince and Janet had their time on top of the charts... In a youth-driven stream-oriented market that's the way things are. shrug

dumb question....how can there be 2 sets of masters?

Not dumb at all. There would technically be two different songs. The original, which has its master. And then whatever Taylor Swift records, which would have its master.

Taylor may speak out too much about her personal feuds but I disagree with the comment about her always playing the victim. Her decision to re-record her songs is an assertive response to a situation she didn't like. Although some of her songs are too bubble gum for me, many of her songs actually celebrate resiliency and assertiveness such as Shake it Off and You Better Calm Down. She seems to practice what she preach, as unlike her many people who get this famous and criticized get so self-destructive and dark in their perspective The main issue that Taylor seems to clearly have is that she seems to fall prey to the infatuation and then dramatic breakup cycle with a series of men. That is not something that makes me either like or dislike her, though it surely makes her human.

Plus she has fans that ALWAYS support her no matter what. Didn't LEAVE her in DROVES when she decided to stand up to her record company. She doesn't have fairweather fans like another artist that dedicated his WHOLE life to muziq.

"Shake it Off" is a pretty insecure song, high key.

Get real; Taylor Swift's popularity will eventually fade like every other pop star...and a new one will take her place. That's the nature of the game.

This is true,

No one wanted Prince's 1999 rerecorded version either

nor Sheila E's recorded version of America, I know that one's a little different, but ...

MickyDolenz said:

I don't think that many people care about re-recorded songs. I used to see compilations with oldies artists sold for cheap in gas stations or on Pickwick Records. Pickwick didn't always have the original singer either, but a soundalike. Some like James Brown has re-recorded songs for later albums. Most people want the version they heard on the radio and companies are likely to license hit songs from the original label.

I'm not a follower or fan of Taylor Swift, she's much too young for my generation, but I've always liked her and don't know why it seems that many don't......can someone please tell me why that is? Why do so many people seem to dislike her so much, what did she ever do to cause them to feel that way about her? I guess it bugs me, because I don't like when others seem to gang up on one person, hating them for whatever reason, that just doesn't sit right with me. Anyway, why do some people dislike this young woman so much?

here is why.... IMO

  • she seems fakes and always plays the victim (she got caught in her lies with Kanye)
  • For someone who is "wholesome" she goes through men like i changed socks (not a good look)
  • Not owning her masters is a business move. Nothing personal, again playing the victim (people laughed at Prince about this)
  • Saw her on tv lipsynching away (real artists don't do that..IMO)

Again, I don't "hate" for anyone liking her music...it's innocent for a young teenager. But as an adult, this schtick has been worn out for many adults can see right through it... again IMO.

That is just people's more superiority and hypocracy towards women

.

And Kanye is still a dick

.

A person can date a lot and still be wholesome. We tend to have a problem with sexuality and judging peoples character by it. Wholesomeness and Innocence are not about whether a person only had 1 sex partner, married their college sweetheart, or is into S&M.

People didn't laugh at Prince about not owning his masters, they laughed at the way he went about it... like not talking to the interviewer and having Mayte talk for him and bunch of other stuff.

.

I think one of the reason people go after her, is because she was Country, and changed to another music genre.

.

I've never been a fan of her, but I also found out a lot of songs I heard that made me feel good where by her. So go figure. Still not a 'fan' but I really dig that new album deluxe cover/art. Reminded me of some images I've been checking out in connection to Blade Runner. For the hell of it I should start a thread on the new album. Maybe I'll buy it.

Taylor Swift on Dealing with Haters: 'I'm Better at Standing Up for Myself When I've Been Wronged'

Maria Pasquini

.

"I'm still someone who is the first to apologize when I'm wrong," the Grammy Award-winning singer, 29, said in a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning. "But I think I'm better at standing up for myself when I've been wronged. So, that's something that I think also comes with growing up."

.

Opening up about a recent example, Swift went on to double down on her assertion she found out Scooter Braun had purchased her former label — including her masters — along with the rest of the world, following his $300 million deal with Big Machine.

.

"Nobody knew," Swift said when asked if anyone in her inner circle had been told ahead of time. "I knew [Big Machine co-owner Scott Borchetta] would sell my music. I knew he would do that. I couldn't believe who he sold it to. Because we've had endless conversations about Scooter Braun. And he has 300 million reasons to conveniently forget those conversations."

.

The singer went on to share that she "absolutely" plans to re-record her first six albums.

.

The singer received plenty of support — and backlash — when she publicly called out Braun and Borchetta after news of their deal went public.

.

In a Tumblr post, Swift accused the manager of "manipulative bullying" over the years, and the weeks following became a game of he-said, she-said between the singer, Braun and Borchetta, who first signed the superstar when she was a teen.

.

Hours after Swift said she was "grossed out" by Braun's acquisition, Borchetta responded with a statement on the label's website, essentially accusing Swift of bending the truth.

.

In his letter, Borchetta, 57, claimed he the deal he offered Swift gave her "100% of all Taylor Swift assets ... to be transferred to her immediately upon signing the new agreement."

.

However, Swift's lawyer Donald Passman told PEOPLE in a statement: "Scott Borchetta never gave Taylor Swift an opportunity to purchase her masters, or the label, outright with a check in the way he is now apparently doing for others."

.

During the CBS Sunday Morning interview, Swift went on to share that while she "absolutely" believes in forgiveness, not everybody deserves a second chance.

.

"People go on and on about how you have to forgive and forget to move past something. No, you don't," she said. "You don't have to forgive and you don't have to forget to move on. You can move on without any of those things happening. You just become indifferent and then you move on."

.

Swift, who recently reconciled with fellow singer Katy Perry after a lengthy feud, explained that she's willing to give people a second chance so long as they've "enriched your life and made it better," despite "some bad stuff too."

.

"But I think if something's toxic and it's only ever really been that, what else can you do?" Swift said. "Just move on. It's fine."

.

What I mean is unless you are following some things intently you won't actually know what is happening. Time and events pass, Swift wouldn't be in class for what Prince was doing in the early-mid 90s. In 1996 she was 7

.

Actually a lot of people did not know what Prince was doing back then. Things were not as clear as he might have thought. George Clinton even had issue with it. When he went back to being Prince he talked about how maybe it wasn't so clear what he was doing.
