Cryptic Length of Tracks/Albums

The choices that he has made for the length of certain songs and albums has always interested me. For example, the total for affirmation i, ii and iii is 7:07. More obvious was the 3 CD's each 60 minutes on Emancipation that represented 180 degrees and the 4 separate 14 minnute tracks on NEWS. What about the extra time at the end of Big City? Lots to discuss here.

You don't think that the total time for affirmation i, ii, and iii being 7:07 was cryptic? Lots of folks thought that the extra time at the end of affirmatiion iii was just there for no reason, until we added up the time for i, ii and iii and realized that the total was 7:07, which was intentional. Why is there extra time at the end of Big City? That also is not unintentional. I think there is more to this than most people think.

If you find meaning in it then who are we to say you're wrong or that it's not a worthwhile exercise? Just don't be surprised if it turns out that Prince didn't find the same meaning as you.

Maybe Prince just wanted us to pull our hair and, wow, it worked lol

.

For Big City I'm pretty damn sure this is to mark the end of the album. Prince is not the only one to have done this although I can't remember who else, but I've seen it on other records, and I did it on my own albums: in this post-LP/CD age you may wish the listener to catch their breath and meditate for a few seconds on your record before some algorithm brutally lauches some totally unrelated song. I can't prove it, but I'm pretty damn sure that's why he did it. No big symbolic stuff there, just a little trick to improve the listener's experience and their appreciation of the work.

I've wondered about the extra time at the end of Big City. Perhaps the additional 45 seconds at the end represent the 45 years he'd been (is) in suspended animation on Clouds.

I assume the extra time on Big City was to make the album exactly 58 minutes. But why 58 minutes?

he had a thing for time. You could see it from his notebooks were he had track lists with the times added and more. One that you missed is that the A and B side of the Around The World album are equal when you add the times of the tracks.

.

It's not a coincidence, but wether there were clues or extra bits of info in it... I don't know.

Some lengths had a signication for sure.
I don't understand the hate on this topic.

Emancipation has a running time of 60:01, 60:02, 60:03. Prince said it had something to do with Pyramids (LOL)
Each CD has 12 tracks on it. Pure symetry
2010 has 77 tracks. "2 7s 2gether, like Time indefinite". Does it ring a bell to you motherfuckers?

MJ too had an obsession with 77, that's why every album in the CD era has a 77 minutes lengths, or even 77:07 or 77:14. Dangerous has 2times 7 tracks.
History has 15 songs on each CD.
Thriller has 9 songs on it, BAd 10(or 11), Dangerous 14, History 15, Invincible 16...I m sure the next album would have been a 17 tracks

IIRC Newpowersoul has 52 tracks(5+2=7) but I could be wrong.

So numbers and spirituality were both important for Prince and MJ

I am also of opinion that Prince deliberately played with numbers on his albums. I am surprised by how many of you say this is complete nonsense? The evidence as supplied by some other posters in this thread is pretty clear IMO. Oh well...

Wasted Kisses was a hidden track at 49. 7x7.
Reprise of Last December was hidden track 21. 7x3.

I'm surprised at the people dissing numbers usage.

I'm not religious in any way but I imagine it could simply have something to do with the Book of Numbers etc....

Exodus is in it. Torah is in it. Numbers are numbers. He liked to be cryptic. He liked to have fun.

Some might say Prince was a very religious man.

Maybe it's alignment of stars. Maybe it's nothing.

This is true. I think there's definitely some numerology stuff in his songs that he put there deliberately, but it's very hard to work out which is which. I suppose what people dislike is when some decide to declare that they have unlocked the (insane) secret meaning to Prince's songs and that Raspberry Beret is in fact a call to arms against the Illuminati and a foreshadowing of Trump in the whitehouse at the same time.

I remember talking to someone on here a few years back who was convinced Prince was a satanist. I asked them about his backwards messages about loving God and they declared that the fact that they were backwards was further proof he was satanist. Pure conspiracy thinking. It didn't occur to me at the time to ask if this means that bands with backward masked satanic messages are actually pro-God? Of course they would have said no and had some reason for it.

lol lol lol

When Prince died there was a conspiracy person I was friends with on FB, usually I didn't care too much about his nonsense, but on 22 april he posted something like Prince had had it coming because he played with satanic symbols and other nonsense like this, and all his conspi friends were commenting about yeah he was right and Prince was this and did that (I don't remember the details but we pretty much got the whole gay + satan + drugs + illuminati + freemason combo). It was so insulting and disrespectful to me, to all of us who were grieving that I didn't even bother reply or trying to reason them, and I just deleted the guy from my FB friends without explaination.

I once re-configured Emancipation to a 12-track single-sized album that hit 60:00 exactly, right in line with the indivual discs of the 3CD set. I felt like I found Prince's intended single-disc configuration, Disc 0 if you will.

It's ridiculous, but I forgot to save the playlist and I could never ever recreate it like how it timed perfectly, which is silly because the first time I just did what everyone else does and filters down their 12 favorites.

Have a good laugh on your own ignorance and dushbaggery.
You just have to see the length of his albums, and the declarations of many engineers that worked with him.
Even Seth Riggs, his vocal coach, talked about that. MJ was proud his first name and surname formed each a 7

Some obvious instances :
- each one of his albums length are 77 minutes.
- he wore a "7" on Scream
- on the cover of Dangerous
He wore a jacket and Brassard's with 777 on History cover and promo video.
- on the BOTDF cover he is a human 7
