"My Medallion" was the only NPGMC track that didn't end up on the chocolate invasion or the slaughterhouse album. I guess he got sued, because the chorus sounds exactly like "spill the wine" from eric burdon & war.

Listened through all of these. There are some similarities with other songs that are mostly due to genre traits. The only one which seems to be an obvious rip off is the lead line to Rasberry Beret lifted from the Buzzcock song.

Ooh I never noticed the similarities between Rock The Boat and the Phase 1 version of 1000 X's & O's. Prince liked that song too.

"Cream" sounds a lot like "Get it On (Bang a Gong)" by T. Rex

Which is itself a winking rip-off of Little Queenie by Chuck Berry.

By Chuck Berry's piano player - like most of Chuck Berry's songs.

Listen at 2.40. I can't help but sing 'spirits move me, every time I'm near you' there every time

.

My mother was a big Barry Manilow fan so it struck me on first listen.

Yes I totally hear it now! It sounds like a deliberate nod to that song, a bit like when he inserted 'Wild Thing' in 'Crimson and Clover'. He often blended songs together (Dolphin/Heroes, Stare/Kiss/Sexy Dancer, etc.)

I guess when u write that many songs, several will inevitably wind up sounding like something else. I ahv ea hard time believing he ever outright meant to do it. And most artists (at least the good ones) cop styles all tghe time. From what I can tell, he didn't listen to that much contemporary music.

That Buzzcocks song was nuts. Never heard it before.

i didn't either, he probably did copy intentionally at times, but just as often, I would think he did it subconcsciously. Who knows though, George Harrison got sued over a song and claimed he wrote it subconsciously, John Lennon rebutted that by saying he knew what he was doing. no big deal, if someone sued everytime a song resembled another, it would be a waste of everyone's time, the times successful suits are brought aren't that common. Michael Jackson was sued several times and although he was a fine writer, he plagiarized often, there is no mistaking Pyt was based off she's a bad mamma jama, you don't get that close and have it be an accident. The vile quincy used to defend michael against those suits but said he plagiarized recently, "all the time".

It's similar, but not the same. Someone who's able to write out a drum chart could probably point out the specific differences.

In fact it was not the only one (at all).

.

And it actually, finally did end-up on the second edition of TCI from 2015 onwards (the only version available as we speak).

.

So he didn't get sued. Maybe he once feared he would, though. Or he just had a last minute change of mind in favor of The Dance. I guess we'll never know.

It's not unofficial, it was actually released on a Razormaid compilation in 1987, titled "Razormaid Chapter M-16", and its real title is "Housequake (It's Not My Fault Mix)". Apparently, Razormaid contracts at the time entitled them to release a remix even if the artists declined to use it on their own records, as happened with Prince.

Christopher Cross/Michael Omartian's 'Words of Wisdom' (1983) -> 'Purple Rain', the instrumental portions thereof.

.

The first 22 seconds, and then from ~3:54 to close, of 'Words of Wisdom', sound alarmingly familiar. Those symphonic purple tribute covers haven't nailed it as closely.
