New albums or deluxe editions

Which do you prefer be used for Prince's posthumous releases? I like the idea of standalone albums, especially if they can be presented as relatively coherent pieces.

Personally the way I'd like to see it done (and I don't think many people would agree with me on this) is to have box sets of album remasters complete with single versions and b-sides and potentially unreleased albums placed in the correct chronological order, exactly like the David Bowie box sets they've been putting out for the past couple of years:

.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/...00ZXWT4PC/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/...01IRHZO4O/

.

And at the same time, start releasing a comprehensive set of outtake albums, ideally grouped by recording session for those tracks recorded outside of Paisley Park, and grouped chronologically for those recorded at Paisley Park.

.

That for me would be the perfect option, though sadly I don't think it will happen like that.

Black is the New Black needs an immediate release. The last thing he completed. Am I alone in thinking this besides antonb? Needs to be. Can we make it happen?

I'd be cool with an unreleased tracks series like 'Power Fantastic: The 1985/6 Sessions vol 3' or whatever. Releases where the tracks included make sense and date from a relevant period to each other, sessions or era.

.

I'm not interested in an album made up of rando songs made to look like a thematic project or polished off in the studio by whatever person the record company thinks will help them sell. "Pharrel Williams (or whoever) 2018 Mix' of She's Just A Baby etc - Wouldn't touch it with someone elses.

I'd love to hear it. It seems unclear whether or not it was 100% finished though.

I'd prefer the likes of Black Is The New Black, Piano & Mic and other newer unreleased stuff but how we can make it happen and how long it will take is the problem with the estate in complete disarray

Totally agree on this. The snippets we all heard from the Black is the New Black sessions sounded awesome. I also want to hear cleaned up version of all the bootlegs from the 81 to 88 period that I think most die hards would agree represents his most innovative period.

With only 60.000 sales worldwide projected (by me) the 1st week of the release of PR deluxe, don't expect a new deluxe edition soon.

.

For some reasons, its is obvious that PR deluxe, and everything about Prince, is too embarrasing for WB to put one penny in the promotion.

yeahthat The Prince estate could definitely learn a thing or two from the Bowie estate. Annual box set releases with newly remastered material and some goodies thrown in (both of which are tremendous, by the way; I can't wait for the Berlin era one), and various one-off releases (such as the recent Cracked Actor release for Record Store Day) to sate fans in the meantime.

On a related note, have you seen any announcements or rumours yet for a third Bowie set? They usually get announced around this time and released towards the end of the year. I'd expect the next set to take us up to Scary Monsters.

If I recall correctly Bowie did a very clever thing while he was still alive. Some years back he packaged up all future projected royalty payments into "Bowie Bonds" which were then sold to investors. Bowie got a big cash injection and the investors got a long term investment.

Ironically dying probably gave the investors a rather nice uplift in their return on investment.

What I don't know is who controls the posthumous releases?
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Nah, not yet. I'm sure it'll be soon, though. I wouldn't be surprised if they just grouped all the eighties albums together tbh, as there's less material to work with, album-wise.

Well that would be 9 albums if I'm not mistaken (Low-Never Let Me Down) so that could work, but it depends on the supplementary material.

If they were to do the same with the Prince releases, I could see the sets looking like:

.

Set 1

For You

Prince

Dirty Mind

Controversy

1999

Purple Rain

Singles + B-Sides (2 or possibly 3 CD)

.

Set 2

Around the World in a Day

Parade

Dream Factory

Crystal Ball

Sign 'O' the Times

Black Album

Singles + B-Sides (3 CD)

.

Set 3

Lovesexy

Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic

Batman

Graffiti Bridge

Diamonds & Pearls

The Symbol Album

Singles + B-Sides (3 CD)

.

Set 4

The Dawn

Come

The Gold Experience

Chaos and Disorder

The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale

Singles + B-Sides (1 CD)

.

And that would take care of the original Warner material. I like spitballing potential sets despite the fact that they will likely never happen.

I'd like to see an album with all unreleased songs from the vault. There are plenty of them there to pick from! It would be so exciting to hear new Prince songs on the radio and watch them go up the charts to #1.

Hard question to answer, whatever gets the unrelased material out, do that.

Disc 2 of Purple Rain Deluxe is effectively a new album. There are also plenty of completed albums that were never released, those should be released as stand alone albums.

And whatever is done certainly needs some real promotion.

If there's no promotion at all, they must be embarrassed.

.

1. Rights issue

2. Their non-access to the vault

3. The announcement of "2 albums + 2 dvds" that were scrapped. They wanted to make something valuable, but, surely because of the estate, they couldn't. So, what they released wasn't worth promoting, because they can't price it more than 25 dollars.

.

If there's no promotion at all (not even in the specialised press, no listening parties, no copies sent to the press, etc), they must be really embarrassed.

I would like a new Gold Experience & Come repackaged into a super album. Missing tracks like Days of the wild, empty room etc, with the DVD.

Also the better version of the song Come.

Since it is rumored that he has full completed unreleased albums in the vault, those should be released first. That way we get to hear the complete albums with the songs in sequence as they were originally intended. I want to hear unreleased tracks that I have completely never heard before on bootlegs so this would satisfy that desire. Don't stop there though because I want good clear versions of unreleased tracks that I have heard before also. So release a full complete unrleased album and then six months later, release an expanded album, preferrably "1999", with an additonal disc of unreleased songs from that era similar to what they did this week with "Purple Rain". In other words, give us two albums a year. No, don't sit around forever between releases because my ass will be 50 in a few months and I don't have forever to wait to hear stuff I want. Hell, it does no good to release it when I'm dead and can no longer hear it so let's wake up and smell the coffee and start living in the real world here because I'm gonna tell it like it is. These little brats these days could care less about any of what his stuff sounds like other than what they've heard their parents play so don't be trying to find shit to try to sell to them because they don't want it plus it just pisses us off for not getting what we want. If they want something, they'll just buy a greatest hits package of stuff they've already heard before because that's as far as their interest goes.

.

However.......do this only if the unreleased material is from the 1980s though. The hell with this recently recorded stuff because most of the stuff he did release was horrible. Hell, people weren't buying them when he was alive so the average person sure as hell ain't going to buy them when he's dead. Start with albums of unreleased material that were made during the "1999" and "Purple Rain" eras, not only because that's when he was sounding his best, but also because that's when he was having the best sales of his career so if anything stands a chance of selling to not only hardcore fans, but also his former fans, albums of unreleased material from that era would be the best bet. So many people raised hell when he changed his style after "Purple Rain" because they wanted more of the "1999/Purple Rain" era sound. Now they can finally have what they want after all these years, if more of that sound exists. Hell, myself included because I've longed for it forever. Hell, we've already waited forever so it's about damn time for us to finally get what we want. The next obvious choice would be unreleased albums from the 1985-1989 era because that era is considered to be his most creative period. I'm a selfish bitch though, I love that era but I would rather have something from the "Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" eras first, and then the "For You" and "Prince" eras. Then.....get around to the 1985-1989 eras. Take care of the old whores first because they aren't going to be here forever. As for the 1990s, 2000s, and recent shit, I could care less about any of it so wait until I'm dead to release it.

.

.

.

That Camille project would be nice to see and hear as a whole album as intended. It could actually be promoted as a new project with animation music videoes. It would be much cooler than any hits album. The songs mostly already exists on different releases to date, but would be perfect to see in its original context. Especially as Camille is almost a different artist than Prince, as it's one of his most thought through alter egos.

People saying PR deluxe selling 70k ww first week is embarrasing. I mean, they didn't waste money on promo, and the physical copy isn't cheap, i'm sure it's a win for Warner. Most artists are selling nothing right now and get most of their sales with streams equivalent album sales.
