Uh, Come was a fully realized project that Prince worked on for about 2 years. The flipside of the Gold Experience, essentially, with Chaos and Disorder housing many of the outtakes from those sessions (and some tracks never considered for either project). Those are not songs that Prince went into the studio to record just to take up space. They were songs he believed in and rotated on these tracklists multiple times ("Chaos and Disorder" was originally a Gold Experience song, etc). So while people might not feel the material is up to snuff, that is irrelevant. Prince believed in the material enough to want it out there.

In late 1993,there was a rumor that Prince was going to purposely give Warner Bros. some less-than-great material for the remaining albums on his contract....and that he would save the "amazing" songs for the post-Warners years. Thus, albums like Come and Chaos And Disorder are supposed to be the "contractual obligation" albums.Who knows, but I personally don't think that those albums are very good.A few decent tracks on both, but nothing really outstanding.

Come wasn't a contractual obligation record. Chaos, Old Friends, and Girl 6 were.

perhaps but I still think of it as a "fuck you" album to Warners
biggrin it lacks strong songs that could be hit singles. We all know that Prince can do better than this.

Prince was a human being, and a human being who took drugs, he is not an angel with wings, he is a mere human being who made some good music. If anything, he would have been held in much higher regard by the general public, if he only released his best music, rather than every single beat and intonation tied to a project.

.

50% of Prince's input is genius, 25% is average and the other 25% of it is just filler that deserved to stay in the vault. Unfortunately as the 1990s wore on, Prince put more and more filler on each album, culminating in Emancipation - One album of Pure genius, one of decent tracks and one of complete filler. There's more filler than in the whole Hungarian treasury lol

.

After he was a huge star, drowning in his own ego and piles of illegal opium laced painkillers, Prince lost grip of reality and released the diamons and the dust together. I love Prince, but I am not a "Rosa fan" like you. Someone who wears rose tinted glasses and think that Prince could do no wrong, he wore angel wings and simonized his halo all the time and the planet was greater for him, blah blah, he was an oversexed musician who made some great music, not Nelson Mandela.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

It's not really a fair comparison, really, since the Beatles "only" have what, 12-13-ish albums?

To compare it to Prince, you'd have to take his career from For You maybe up to Graffiti Bridge/D&P, so just a few years past what people consider his "masterpiece" era (1978-1988).

I don't think too many people were saying that Prince songs sucked in that era (well, maybe a few off GB/D&P, but that's it). Those critcisms came later, as Prince surpassed 20 albums then 30 and then almost 40.

I'll put it another way: The Beatles ended at just the right time. They are forever captured in that moment. Prince kept going.

I mostly agree with what you are saying though I am glad Prince continued past the 80s because there was plenty more good music that came out of him after his peak even if he lost the consistent greatness of his early studio recordings. In fact, I wish we had at least another decade of his music to look forward to.

Truth - all of it except Don't Play me and Animal Kingdom

There's no way on earth that Comeback could be considered filler. No way. That song is in equal measure both beautiful and devastating. It took enormous courage for him to put that out there. Comback is the antithesis of filler.

God, I played this at my mum's funeral last September. I hope I didn't say goodbye with a filler

I really don't think Prince had any filler. I think the fact that no one can agree on what are good and bad songs from him is fairly proof that he had no idea himself. He thought MPLsound or whatever was as good as anything else he had done.

I mean, i'm sure he was aware that not everything was Purple Rain and sometimes he purposely held back very high quality songs because he felt the time wasn't right but in terms of what he was capable of at any one moment i'd say he always believed his albums were solid, start to finish.

Not to say some of the filler is not enjoyable, but none of the above tracks I feel add much to his legacy and quite a few subtract from it.

And therein lies the problem. At least a third of the songs you dismiss as filler are amongst my most beloved Prince cuts. Face Down, Circle of Amore, New World, Mad Sex, Art Official Cage, The Rainbow Children... I love all these songs. And you say there's no filler on 3121, when imo, it's his weakest non-internet-released, non-instrumental album.

I think you're right Prince put out whatever he was feeling, or was happy with at any particular time and always thought it was solid. I remember an interview on British TV where Prince got upset because the interviewer, Kevin Greening, asked him if anyone ever said no to him, or said something was substandard. This was in reference to New Power Soul. Prince replied by saying has anyone ever asked Greening if his shirt was substandard. Something along those lines anyway, I'd like to see that moment again but can't find the interview online anywhere. Damn you, life before youtube.

RIP sad

Laydown

Asolutely No.Never,my reason for this is,listen to his B sides, where is there even a hint of a song he made that wasnt arranged and produced with the thought of 'just throw this on i need a filler'.

His music was his life and while some songs sound dated or 'unfinished'(as some jerk off claimed in a magazine article about The ballad of dorothy parker),he would never put in a filler,he didnt have to.He was a musicians musician. If there was a song he felt was weak it wouldnt make the album.

Come and Chaos n Disorder seem like filler songs as albums mostly.

During the classic era though:

Glam Slam

The Max

Arrogance

Hot Thing

Tick Tick Bang

Trust

Lemon Crush

The Max is no filler. This is a song he was playing live in 2014.

OK, maybe I've not been clear enough.

I'm NOT talking about songs you don't like.

I AM talking about songs you think Prince did simply so there would be another song on the album. Something that you don't think he really put much effort or thought into, and that was on purpose. A going-through-the-motions-because-I-don't-really-care kind of song.

Or maybe I just should

Yes, and I think anything that was a single or he played live with any sort of regularity (or even t all) cannot be considered filler.

Maybe time to look at this from a different perspective.. There are some tracks that absolutely are filler, like all those silent tracks before bonus songs. Also, Prince had a number of albums that all had the same time:

-Emancipation: all three cd's were 1 hour

-NEWS: 4 songs of 14 minutes

-Around the World in a Day: both sides are 21 minutes and 9 seconds, or 1269 seconds (apparently he's the 1 2 69)

.

I'm sure there are more examples.

.

It's not easy to have tracks and collections be the exact same length, so I'm sure he filled more time with some tracks. The track may not be filler, but that last 1 minute 39 seconds might be.

.

Are there more examples of weird timing coincidences that you noticed? Like Lovesexy being 45 minutes, the exact time of one side of a cassette.. (90 minute cassettes were what I used to record all new albums on the moment I got them, to avoid wearing out the records)

Of course, it's also possible songs were edited down in length to fit the concept.
