Sgt. Pepper’s artwork updated to feature all the legends lost in 2016

source

EDIT: Updated the photo.

We never realized how good we had it back in 2015. Since the news of David Bowie’s death left us heartbroken on January 10th, 2016 has tested our resolve with a seemingly unceasing string of celebrity deaths. There was Prince in April. Gene Wilder in August. Sharon Jones in November. It was difficult enough to mourn each of these icons individually, without considering their place within some grand, fucked-up cosmos of death, but a new illustration by Twitter user Christhebarker has given us a wider perspective on the loss we experienced in 2016.

Using the Beatles’ classic artwork for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as a template, artist created a poignant and painstakingly detailed montage featuring more than 40 legends we lost this year. Occupying the Beatles’ honored spots are Wilder, Lemmy Kilmister (who actually died in late 2015), Prince, and Bowie. Elsewhere, the montage features famous faces including Leonard Cohen, George Martin, Glenn Frey, Alan Rickman (dressed as Professor Snape from the Harry Potter series), and too many others.

As if that weren’t enough tragedy for one photo, the image also reminds us of the most notable geopolitical disasters to occur in 2016, with the word “BREXIT” spelled out in flowers and a “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” hat sitting front-and-center. Hey, at least there’s a Leicester City banner to remind us that there’s still hope, no matter how high the odds seem stacked against us going into 2017.

Bloody shite year as far as losses are concerned. On the upside, I discovereed prosecco, I have two polish christmas decorations from a dear friend, I'm on night-shift so that means good money and little work and I'm thinking of painting my new flat green.

Merry fucking christmas!

Once again. Fuck You 2016.

On a side note, seeing that picture of Prince. Do you think he ever saw that and thought "damn... if I'd pushed my thumbs down I'd have invented the heart/hand thing".

And Lemmy was December 2015. Slight poetic license there.

The dog is Walnut died a few months ago. People came by the hundreds to walk with Walnut and his owner for Walnut's last walk.

The following tribute, of those we lost this year, includes both Prince and Vanity.

Unfortunately, it was immediately moved yesterday from this forum to the "Non-Prince Music" forum...

Check it out:

where's Merle?

I understand country is a niche genre but a few transcend their genre, and Merle was one of them... he doesn't deserve to get lost in the shuffle, even in a messed up year like this was.

It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Because Kenny Baker passed away. He was a little person who was stuck inside R2-D2 all these years, operating the unit. You can see his head sticking out of the R2 unit.

Also, Tim Rose, who played Admiral Ackbar, passed away. He's the fish guy character, top right.

Brexit doesn't need to be there and why on Earth is Jo Cox MP (lady in the square photograph on the floor) there as well, she's no legend, no one heard of her until June 2016.

I simply like it as a tribute and for the hours of work the maker put in it.

Maybe the artist is hoping people who voted Brexit could swap places with the people in the picture

Couldn't they find a better picture of Bowie? I only knew it was him because of the face paint. That one of Prince is not great either.

Without Vanity, this is incomplete.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
