From my understanding, Prince didn't have a Fentanyl patch, he injected it. I don't think it's normal for a patient to inject. Correct me if I'm wrong.

wow...never seen this in 20 yrs as a nurse. Any time your injecting anything into your body there is no room for error...quick way to die.

how do you think he got it? anybody? he should have been committed to a psychiatric hospital...I am right about that nursev right...or an addiction center...shouldn't have been a choice...right? he was way too far gone for him to be running around alone with narcotics? also, you all realize the effects on breathing, heart from this stuff?

just a sidebar that fentanyl patches are so strong that when you apply them u need gloves on...they're absorbed through the skin and go straight to the bloodstream n cause headaches...so imagine injecting it and making an error. never seen a fentanyl injection.

This is just one more piece in the puzzle. Everyone needs to calm down and wait until ALL of the facts are in.

It's not over yet.....

RIP Prince. We will NEVER forget you. Thank you so much.

Isn't there a difference according to sex, body frame and age? I don't think people can compare a man to their girlfriends.

Not you, but so many people went off in the wrong direction when I mentioned weight.

What I was actually wondering is about the dosage of medication relative to his weight? Is is true that a dosage for a smaller person would differ from a big person?

all true and most medications are prescribed according to gender, weight and height. I think that one of these doctors didn't know the other had prescribed something else....poor Prince caught in between and took em.

Smaller sized people have a lower tolerance for everything, not just alcohol.

They also cut themselves and put the patch over the cut to get it in faster.

A friend of mine was found with several patches on him.

It's possible he had one on and forgot it was on and used a secret be one that happens a lot on accident.

It just sucks all around. He was in severe pain if he was using those.
Surprise, surprise.

I just wanted to chip in re Fentanyl.

I live in the UK, where doctors are paid salaries by government (NHS) not 'by the prescription', if that makes sense.

I run a women's health organisation where members are often in chronic, agonising pain for all sorts of conditions - not necessarily cancer or anything terminal. Many of them are given Fentanyl patches for slow-release pain management, along with pills of various sorts for break-through pain - so, no, it's not unusual for patients with complex and severe pain conditions to have both patches AND pills.

In addition, fentanyl isn't limited to patches - it can also be used in the form of lozenges, injections, and nasal sprays. The latter forms tend to be for relatively instantaneous pain-relief as opposed to the slow-release patch. I don't think we've been told how Prince 'self-administered' his...

That pretty much confirms the one story that Prince got surgery on one side of his hip and didn't get the other side done because it didn't relieve the pain he was in confused

Such a shame. A lifetime of decisions leading to a tragedy that could have been prevented if he or his people would have reached out for help just a day earlier.

I have so many knots in my stomach after seeing the ME's report. Hearing the news did not make me love Prince any less. My eyes slightly blurry. Purple tears on the brink. My mind not fully comprehending or wanting to understand and processs why this happened. I feel like I am in a time warp - back to 4/21. It is 4/21 all over again and I am seeing those unfortunate words on my computer screen. Why did this have to happen? I'm utterly devasted again. What hurts the most is knowing how close Prince possibly could have been to getting the help desparately needed. I hope his passing was quick. I agree with the other poster who mentioned the cost of his gift. Prince gave it all and then some. He established his own level. Rest easy my friend. I hope you're in a place pain-free with your spirit soaring high. You did the damn thiing and did it well. I will never forget you. Such a loss all over again for us all sad

And your understanding is based on...?

I got this from the US National Library of Medicine. You can google it yourself. It says:

Fentanyl injection is used to relieve severe pain during and after surgery. It is also used with other medicines just before or during an operation to help the anesthetic work better.

Fentanyl belongs to the group of medicines called narcotic analgesics (pain medicines). It acts in the central nervous system(CNS) or brain to relieve pain. Some of its side effects are also caused by actions in the CNS such as drowsiness or dizziness.

This medicine is to be administered only by or under the immediate supervision of your doctor.

jonnylawson: Chronic pain is a VERY important issue that needs to be discussed! You obviously do not understand the absolute desperation one feels when they have long-term chronic pain. If you don't want to read about this, then leave this thread!! WHY get on here and criticize others' way of processing this?!? [Edited 6/2/16 13:39pm]
Give me a break! Discussing what he was wearing and how much he weighed etc is just weird. And I work with Healthcare providers every day so I know how important the opioid abuse epidemic issue is. I support any and all efforts to fix the problem. Let's focus on that. For all those still thinking there was more to what caused his death should rest assured he didn't have cancer or aids or whatever. He died of drug toxicity. They would have included any other conditions that contributed to his death. The law enforcement investigation will have more of the why's and how's that led to prince's death. [Edited 6/2/16 14:41pm]

Sonshine, that's not correct, they are only giving exact cause of death but nothing about underlying health info. Please read the Press Release page info again...you'll note that they state there that they only give certain info. The second page is a Release of Public Data Form. So probably not the *final* results. What they want us to know about and that is it.

And please, no hating from anyone about this response. Not looking to argue with anyone, just pointing out what was missed.

Oh no sad that's awful. I totally understand why it happened, I know people with the patches too for their chronic pain, and one patch can not be good enough too and countering it or wanting to can be risky. I don't know about the US but over here there have been concerns about patches being available on the black market and what could be done to regulate use or how to distribute them in general. I don't know if Prince may have tried to double them for a short time and it killed him or what but something like that is so sad and so preventable if you have proper support and coping strategies in place

Hell, doctors even warn people taking nicotine patches not to over do them and certainly not to take them while they smoke cigs at the same time--they risk having a heart attack!

a lot of times hospice uses both...morphine increases the speed of death by decreasing respirations.

eek All I can say is DAMN! I'm learning things on this board today I've never heard of in half a century on this planet...and it sucks major ass. We are way beyond worrying about illegal drugs in this country--the problem is far worse than I thought it was (and I thought it was really bad). The drug companies and irresponsible doctors need to be penalized for their irresponsibility...like yesterday.

I'd also just like to comment on the 'cause of death' given by medical examiners. Certainly here in the UK, it is not required to provide information pertaining to underlying contributory factors (or diseases) - only the precise CAUSE of death.

For example, my Dad had a highly aggressive form of bladder cancer. The cancer caused kidney blockage and failure which ultimately resulted in his death, 4 weeks after diagnosis. On his death certificate, cause of death cited was 'renal (kidney) failure', NOT the bladder cancer - even though this was the underlying disease.

Some one is probably going to go to jail on this one. Probably why that MN Dr was fired...

I know many people who go to pain management And are prescribes Fentanyl patches plus Pills My 83 yr old ex mother in law is one of them . Its used alot for severe chronic pain .

I doubt it is prescibed often to non-terminal patients. But there are a lot of sh*tty drs out there I suppose...

Actually its prescribed more than you would think .
Its only done through pain management
And usually to people like my brother in law who
Have been on percocette for 10 plus
Years and it no longer controls their
Pain due to tolerance issues

My coworker is in pain management and
Has been for years
She got offered the patches but said
Hell no !
And yes there are alot of shitty doctors
Out there who will prescribe anything !

I work in detox and if Prince was in the state I think he was in he should've been in an acute care facility...a damn hospital!

This. As well as having a child addicted to opiates, I also work in the MH/Substance abuse field. Fentanyl is more powerful than heroin...there is no way he could have come off of them by himself. I'm leaning towards believing that Dr. Schulenberg didn't prescribe it, but I believe his part in this and perhaps what could get him in trouble is that he attempted to help Prince wean off of opiates outside of a detox facility, which was a recipe for disaster. Being off of the meds for days and then taking it can cause an overdose and this doctor should not have been a part of a do it yourself detox. My opinion only.
