Prereleasing Songs from PE/AOA bad idea?

Except for Breakdown, the pre-releases have gone over with fans like a lead balloon. Some movies do better if people don't get to review them before they come out.

Whitecaps, U Know and FunkNRoll remix all gave an opportunity for hardcore and casual fans to be highly critical of the new albums. Probably not smart to market the album with a songs with lead vocals from Hannah, samples/autotune and a 90's sounding Timbaland remix.

Perhaps it will be a good thing for him to go in a different direction, but I think that using those three songs to market the albums this close to the release was a big mistake. My wife was completely turned off from the entire project after listening to those three songs. Most non-hardcore fans will have the same reaction.

P is going to come to Donny's house with the full band, play her favorite hits live in the living room , sign the new albums and have his wife reconsider. It might knock out the neighborhood power but I doubt the neighbors would care, or the cops.

Gotta keep the missus happy.

clouds, U Know and Funknroll have been very well received outside of org in general.

If you read the threads on the org you will also find a lot of fans really liking the songs.

Actually, I don't think WB or Prince expect the records to be huge mega hits, they are looking for some decent sales. If a good video is released in time, they might move more units and AOA might not fade as quickly -- if they do even more promotion with further videos, it might become a nice mid-size hit like Diamonds and Pearls but that's about it.

<--- This Prince fan loves the new songs and they have energized my excitement for the albums. Something that hasn't happened in awhile for me when it comes to new Prince music. The people around me love FunknRoll. Why? It's a very fun and funky song that gets their booty movin. Don't like the new stuff? Ok... That's cool...but just because u don't like it certainly doesn't mean it's a sure-failure.

I don't think it makes any difference. I haven't heard half of them myself, so if you want to get a preview you can, and if you'd rather wait you can do that too - Win/win?

The release of these songs actually turned my anticipation way up. Once I liked one dong, it got me to reassess others I had written off. Now I can't wait for these albums to come out (mostly AOA). I wasn't excited at all by the initial announcement. I'm excited to have the songs I already know together on one album, along with others that will be new to me. Breakfast can wait, but I can't!

It was a great idea preleasing songs before the album is released because now I know not to buy it. If I had actually spent my money on this sellout mess, I would have been pissed.

I think donnyenglish is right, that pre-releasing is a bad idea. People can judge a whole album/cd just by the few songs they've listened to. That's the problem with today's music and stuff by internet. Nothing is a surprise anymore, and "leaks" are the norm. It spoils things. No need for any of you to be rude to the guy for posting his opinion, just because you don't like it.......geez!

Maybe if you're carefully buying one song at a time. If you pre-ordered the whole thing, you don't pay more each time a song is released.

If I remember rightly pre-releasing songs before the full album release was known as singles back in the day. That was then, this is NOW. I really like them all and will be pre-ordering at least 10 copies. It seems to me some people don't like Prince and his music, they just like Purple Rain.

I'm not quite sure what your liking dongs has to do with the pre-releases, but hey, nothing wrong with being open to new things. biggrin

.

I've actually decided to wait. Not necessarily until the release (if the whole albums leak, I'll probably listen early), but at least until I can hear them as complete collections. I did listen to Whitecaps and U Know, but just once. Just a little over a week to go.

I'm a little confused by the fact that he's not out tearing it up on some talk shows, to promote the albums. Everyone knows his live versions are killer! So that may help push sales. Just seems like there's very minimal effort going into promoting the albums, especially considering he's back with WB and this is his 1st U.S. release in 5 years. Releasing "singles" hardly counts, because most mainstream radio stations will not play them.

If the 'device'doesn't help, you bear the consequences.

As for the pre-releasing of so many songs: it gives away too much.

The songs should be a secret taht is unveiled at the day of release.

Like in the old days.

So what strategy is behind this new approach?

Like the old days, my ass. You are familiar with singles, right? Or the many times artists would air an entire album or side ok the radio to give people a preview?

The response to the new tracks, particularly FUNKNROLL, outside of prince.org has been exceptionally good and the new music is charting on iTunes all across Europe, so I'd say the WB strategy of pre-releases has gone well.

This is probably the best general public response to new Prince music since 1995. Just look at Twitter...

Exactly. I can remember when radio treated a new release by a major artist as an event and would have the majority of the tracks in rotation until the albums release. In fact I can remember hearing most of the tracks from SOTT on Houston's Majic 102 FM (including Housequake with a reverse effect over the word "bullshit") before the album came out. Same thing with Michael's "Bad". Now it's like pulling teeth to get radio to play a single song, so this is the internet equivalent of that.
