I'll admit that I have plenty of intuitions and do plenty of speculating. The following falls in that area.

One of the reasons I think it may have been pretty painful all around, including for P, is that he seemed at times fascinated with whether people would stick around under trying circumstances.

I'm thinking of things like Susannah's story of P asking her to visit him at his place and then going silent...the story where he calls her later, extremely upset that she eventually took off.

Many years later, in the Piano and Mic shows, P highlights the movie scene where Streisand calls Redford to talk about how he hurt her. P (of course) sets this side by side with If I Was Your Girlfriend. P speaks with wonder about the idea that Redford hurt Streisand badly, yet Streisand remains so close to Redford in particular, that he is the one she calls to talk through and navigate her feelings.

On a side note, it even seems to me that one part of what impresses P is how it appears that the Streisand character may not have any had a single other person who felt close enough for her to seek out for that conversation.

There's the whole thing about humans developing a sense of security through audaciously pushing the limits of behavior. And after doing so, coming to the perception that, despite strong repercussions, they are loved unconditionally. BUT...I have a teenager, so at this point in life, I may just see certain dynamics everywhere I look. lol

Yes, one thing is for sure - Prince was extremely complicated in relationships. We can speculate how and why he became or was that way, but in reality we just don't know. Seems he may not have even known.

*

I loved his discussion of IIWYG and the analogy of the movie "The Way We Were". My take on it was that he was looking at himself as Streisand's character, with regard to his woman hurting him, but also being the only one he could talk to about it. It brought to mind his song Wally, when he screams out, "what am I gonna do? She was the only one in the whole world that I could talk to..."

It must have been extremely frustrating for the women involved with him. He seemed like such a complex person. Crystal Zehtner commented in her interview with authorities that he was unhappy when she was working for him and it saddened me to hear her say that. I would have never guessed anything like that was going on at the time because he appeared to be so in control and happy during the shows back then. I suppose it was a different story off stage.

If he's sleeping with 3-4 different ladies at a time, how can anyone pinpoint that a song is about 1 particular person? Because they say so? There have been several songs that each lady thought it was about them, and they've all claimed it.

How can you choose to believe 1 and not the others? You can't really go by what Prince said, because quite frankly he wasn't truthful 1/2 the time either.

Oh PennyP, you are officially the QUEEN of changing your position AND the narrative to fit whichever argument you are spinning at any given time! on any given thread!

*

So, if we go by your comment "you can't really go by what Prince said, because quite frankly he wasn't truthful 1/2 the time either".....then this would line up perfectly with the song The Beautiful Ones, right?? Everyone in Prince's camp at the time the song was recorded - the Engineers, the band - EVERYONE - has stated, on the record, that the song - or a good portion of it, was inspired by Prince's frustration about Susannah Melvoin being in a relationship with another guy when he was initially pursuing her. So, now, based on your comment, we can go back to questioning that song as well then.

*

So, to clarify PennyP - you don't believe Engineers, you don't believe the women Prince was personally involved with, you don't believe his band members, AND you don't believe Prince. Okay, got it lol lol lol

Don't you know? Every song Prince wrote was about Susannah. razz

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Oh, I think he probalby had many unhappy times off stage. Brings to mind his song Solo. Such a heart-wrenching song of loneliness and loss. No doubt he felt and was at his best when he was performing on stage. He fed off of the energy of the fans. A big dose of therapy and postiive energy for sure. Imagine having to come "down" from that feeling. Had to be rough, especially for someone who could not sustain close personal relatiionhips. I think it's why he would go right from concert to after show, and play until the early morning hours. More time to have the adoration of the crowd, and less time to be alone.

Ooooohhhh, but no no PennyP - sorry, ya can't have your cake and eat it too on this one. Doesn't work that way at all biggrin

If you are stating what I bolded above - which you clearly did just post - then NO song is concrete with regard to its inspiration - regardless of what Prince had stated. If you are now going to CHANGE that position, then GUESS WHAT??!! Ya gotta apply it to ALL of the songs that Prince specified were about a certain person - such as - FOREVER IN MY LIFE biggrin

Oh no "Spin Queen"....sorry!! Per your post, we can't go by what Prince stated to be the inspiration for his songs, because , according to you "he lied 1/2 the time". So, let's see....if you go by the 50/50 rule, then which song was he lying about - TBO or Forever In My Life??

Hmmmmmm, gee I wonder which one PennyP and the "harem" will choose?? Because, don't you know??? NO SONG was ever inspired by Suasnnah Mellvoin - God no, never ever ever ever lol

Someone was asking about the snorkeling story (maybe rednblue and/or Pinkcashmere?) and what Prince did that was so funny. I listened to that part again, and I think he may have done the "fish lips" thing to Susannah as she swam up to him. I think it's great that she got to see that side of him, and it seems that, even with his inability to show emotional weakness or direct verbal affection, he still felt comfortable enough with her to goof around and not always have to be "on" in terms of his persona as a performer.

*

It was really interesting listening to one of the Revolution rehearsals (I think from Summer of '84) that was posted on YT for awhile. Before the actual rehearsal starts Matt, Lisa and Wendy are goofing around and carrying on, and it's just absolutely hilarious. They start spoofing some current songs - I think the first one is "Our House", the alternative song by Madness -which I loved back then, and Matt starts doing a whole skat using the "Popeye" voice. Then Lisa chimes in as Olive Oil saying, "oh, Popeye, oh Popeye!!" Then Wendy starts singing "Oh my genitals, oh my genitals..." the lyric from the song Suburban Lawns called Janitor, and she says, " does anyone know that song by Suburban Lawns? Roy, (I'm guessing she was talking to Roy Bennett) I'm sure you must have heard that song.." - I guess he was up on the alternative music. Then, Lisa starts playing the keyboard riff to Stand Back by Stevie Nicks - which is interesting since Prince played on that song - and she turns it into a hilarious spoof by altering her voice while singing the chorus - don't know how to desribe it but it was fricking hilarious!!! I had tears rolling down my face. Matt started laughing hysterically. Wendy says, "I'm having a heart attack over here!" Then Prince says, "too much laughing" in his cute monotone voice. SO pissed I didn't save that one before it was pulled off of YT!!!!

*

A really great example of how much fun that group had together. No doubt it wasn't all fun and there were tense moments, as they've stated, but that recording was absolutely hilarious and fun. Made you want to be there with them. So, Susannah's comment during her first interview when she was asked about Prince's close collaboration with Wendy and Lisa and their influence duirng that time, and she answered that it was fun and funny, with nothing contrived about it was right on point based on the rehearsal that I heard.

You HAVE to find that one!! I'm telling you, you will laugh hysterically. Pretty sure it was one of the rehearsals for the PR tour. Matt and Lisa were like a musical comic duo. They were waiting for Wendy's guitar to be re-strung or fixed in some way. In between some of the joking around Prince starts talking to one of the guitar techs, and says something like, "no, we're not using that one, Wendy wanted her own guitar remember? So that's why we got the new ones. I think he may have been referring to the purple guitars that she played on the tour. SHe recently said they were stolen off of the gear truck at some point during the tour. That really sucks!

I'll have to listen to the rehearsals that I'm thinking of and see if it's on it. Some were hours long and I didn't have time to listen to them in their entirety. They were rehearsing "International Lover" in one and you can hear Prince talking to the band and telling them how to play it. Very interesting and cool to hear! He had them playing it over and over and you could hear how meticulous he was. That particular rehearsal was a bit annoying to listen to after a while because he would have them start the song, then stop and it went like that for a at least ten minutes lol.

In the rehearsal I posted about, the banter between the band is the first thing you hear, and then they start rehearsing. It's great because they go from one song to the next on the PR setlist, so it must have been closer to the start of the tour. It's a little over an hour long I think.

Yes they did! I've been listening to the one with "International Lover" and "Irresistible Bitch" "Sister Fate" Prince was cracking jokes throughout but couldn't hear the other band members too well, except for a comment by Wendy and I believe Lisa giggling. This was the one where Prince told Eric to put some panties on his sax. It's over two hours long and a bit tedious to listen to at times because there is so much repetition but still interesting to hear. I'll have to track down the other recordings and I'll orgnote you. smile

Okay great, thanks! Have you heard the Ice Cream/Soul Psychodelicide rehearsal? That's a great and funny one too - it's the expanded Revolution with the backup dancers and Susannah singing backround. The first chunk is just an instrumental jam from another rehearsal and then it cuts to the "Ice Cream" jam. Really good and funky session. Greg Brooks is hilarious too. He does something really funny - probably a funny dance move or something and Prince laughs hysterically and says, "no Brooks, no!!" At another point Prince screams out "white girls!" and then Brooks follows that with "black girls!!". Really great one!!

Sure! No,I haven't heard that one but I really want to now! I've only heard the rehearsal of "Ice Cream Castles" where he starts with "Good mernin Good mernin!" from 2012 for the Welcome 2 Australia tour shared by Dr Funk. I'll be on the look out! Sounds great!

You're bending over backwards explaining in details the type of loneliness she was going through. What difference the loneliness? She said he asked her to move out- and she eventually left the apartment she was living in because she said she was lonely. It doesn't matter if it was physically loneliness or spiritually loneliness. She was lonely. As well as, completely heart broken that he asked her to leave. As she herself stated. Isn't that disheartening to you? I listened to her story completely and I don't think the tale that she told here was romantic by any stretch of the imagination. [Edited 1/12/19 5:23am]

This is why it would be nice to read a book or hear an interview with someone more down to earth like Jill or Judith or Andy. Someone who can actually form a decent sentence. I thought Devin’s book was good and honest, and until he out of the blue ended things he was sharing feelings about his songs, his father, and his band members with her like a pretty normal person not like someone who “can’t share his feelings”. The story Susannah told makes me think he put up with her because he needed her as a singer. And I don’t know why she complains about not getting paid enough, it’s not like she even paid for her own food let alone housing or utilities.

I'll just put his lyrics here to the song he wrote for Wendy, Lisa, and Susannah for you to read and absorb, and then we can discuss how "unimportant" she was to Prince. Oh, and I'm still waiting for your take on his expressing how "unimportant she was to him in songs like Forever In My Life, Empty Room, Wally, Come Home biggrin

In This Bed Eye.png Scream is the twelfth and final track on the first disc of Prince's 19th album Emancipation, the third album to be credited to SymbolSmallerBlue.png.

Basic tracking dates are unknown, but it is likely that the track was recorded in late 1995 or 1996 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It was created using feedback noise produced when Prince put a guitar on the floor. It is dedicated (in reversed text) in the album's booklet to "Wendyand Lisa and Susannah",

To these walls I talk
Telling them what I wasn't strong enough to say
To these walls I talk
Telling them how I cried the day you went away

[Chorus]
How did we ever lose communication?
How did we ever lose each other's sound?
Baby, if you wanna, we can fix the situation
Maybe we can stop the rain from coming down

[Verse 2]
In this bed I scream
Lonely nights I lay awake thinking of you
And if I'm cursed with a dream
A thousand times I feel whatever I've put you through

[Bridge]
Tell me, how're we gonna put this back together?
How're we gonna think with the same mind?
Knowing all along that life is so much better
Living and loving together all the time
Living and loving
In this bed I, in this bed I, in this bed I scream

[Verse 3]
In this car I drive
I'm looking for the road that leads back To the soul we shared
With my very life
I'd gladly be the body upon the cross we bear (Cross we bear)

[Chorus]
How did we ever lose communication?
How did we ever lose each other's sound?
Baby, if you wanna, we can fix the situation
Maybe we can stop the rain from coming down

[Outro]
Maybe we can't, maybe we can
Stop the rain, stop the rain
In this bed I, in this bed I, in this bed I scream
I scream
In this bed I scream

Oh yes - seems Prince really could have cared less about Susannah eek

Is Prince being cheeky & stating that these 3 ladies are like talking to a wall?

It's a great one. It starts out with a really funky bass and keyboard combo and then Wendy comes in with a seriously funky guitar riff. Then one of the dancers, I think Greg Brooks screams "that's funky Wendy, that's funky!! And either Lisa or Susannah scream "Woooo!!" Mark's bass playing is just soooo funky and good. Prince starts in with the "we are young, we're not old, and we are funky" lyrics and then the girls join in and they repeat it a few times. Brooks is cutting up in the backround saying "shiiiiit!, harmony damnit!" Then Prince says, "just the brothers" and they sing "if you here any noise, it's just me and the boys..." Then when Prince wants to bring it back around he screams "ICE CREAM!!!" and they start the line all over again. He's talking a lot to the band. He's says, "okay, how should we break it down, should we do this? Like, where you would break it down on the 1 just do that and come back on the 2" He coaches Bobby on how he wants the cymbals played. Then he jokes and says, "new song, soulpyschodelicide - 3 years and four months, take up two albums!" He doesn't know they're being recorded, because toward the end he says to Susan Rogers, "Susan, can we record?" Susan or somebody else was already recording, which is great, because it's totally laid back and fun.

*

Def my favorite rehearsal. I think it's probably Spring/Summer of 1986, or I guess it could be '85. Not sure.

No I don't think so. The lyrics imply that he's alone in his bed with no one there, so he's "talking" to the four walls that surround him. Also, it's a catchy way of explaining that he could not tell them how he was feelling when they left. It's his version of an "I'm sorry for hurting you, I miss you, and I'd like to see you/work with you again.

I gotta find that one! There are some Parade rehearsals out there too I haven't heard yet. Probably some gems on those! The rehearsal I was thinking of where he said "Good Mernin!" was actually of Days of Wild & Loose. The one for Ice Cream Castles was a mashup with Mutiny.

I'll see if I can get it to you wink I don't have any Parade rehearsals, but I do have the video of the March '86 1st Ave show, which is fantastic, and also have the last show where he smashes his guitar - that one is rough b/c it was filmed by a fan in the audience and video cameras were not great back then. But, still great for the historic moment.

Ok! If you can,I'd really appreciate it! I've seen the footage from the last show and it is very fuzzy but still cool to see! I'm not sure if I've seen the First Ave show-maybe bits of it. I saw some clips circulating a while back. I'm listening to one now from Oct.'84 and they are doing a cover by B.B. King and he told Wendy to "get sleazy" before her guitar solo. Nice sax by Eric too.

Ooh, I don't have that one! My file for the 3/86 Parade tryout is the whole show. The video cuts out on a small part of it, but you get it for most of the concert. It's the "St Paul Punk Of The Month" show eek Poor Paul!!! I'll see if I can get that one to you...

STILL NO STICKY?!!!

-

It's obvious that all THIS, the relationship with the people he was surrounded with back then, resulted in MUSIC, and even more music.

-

She (together with W&L) was (were) an important, if not THE important element during the highlight of his whole carreer, not Mayté, or Manuela ...

-

You don't need to write a book (but it helps), to get such important information.

What Susannah told here is of a tremendous importance to that giant Prince puzzle we all

anxiously so much would like to see fullfiled.

Simply because it's such an important thread.

-

They should make 1 board of all things Prince, associates, concerts.

Cause old and valuable news will be rare in the near future.

Those who tell something, have something to say now.

There is no PRINCE anymore who's dictatorship was hanging over them to say/tell something.

Everyone is now (sort of) free to speak.

-

I'm also waiting for BOBBY Z to write a book, let alone Lisa or Wendy...

...or Susannah herself !
