muchtoofast said: Sorry, but you've got the timing all wrong here. Alan Light's book was on the making of the Purple Rain movie and the PR tour - 1983-1984. Prince's new house was almost 2 years away from being built. So, she was referring to the Spring/Summer of '84. Oh, and have you read or seen many interviews with people who really knew Prince - not just the chicks he was trying to seduce? They've ALL discussed his "petulant" side, so Susannah was far from alone there.

I recall reading in DMSR that Prince was unhappy with the way things were going with Under The Cherry Moon and Susannah said that he stayed up all night talking about how much he hated the movie. Per Nilsen wrote that someone stopped by the house, can't remember who exactly but I think it was either Peggy or Susan and Susannah told them what a horrible night they had. She may have been thinking of times such as that when describing him that way.

Yes, it seems he knew the film was most likely not going to do well at the box office. He may have been regretting taking over as Director. I think she best described Prince's "petulant" or moody side when, early on in their relationship, she told the story of him refusing to speak to her, and then calling her and screaming at her for leaving the hotel room. I think that sums it up right there. confused

NO. What Susannah said was that they lost touch for awhile while he was BEING A ROCK STAR - petulant and needy, getting any girl that he wanted. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any big name rock star, especially back then, who did not fit that description, at least for a period of time. Certainly, Prince was no exception back then as he suddenly found himself with the number one song, album and film in one year.

*

Hmmm, Prince telling Devin - and by the way he did actually tell Jill Jones the same thing, because she states it on her interview with Prince Podcast (take a listen!)- that he "had to get married" - yeah, one can only wonder why he would say that to the chicks he was screwing on the side?? Come on!! It really can't be more obvious, and it's clear they were either completely gullible and naive, or were in denial. Sorry, but Prince didn't have to do anything he didn't want to do at that time. He clearly didn't want to lose Susannah, period.

*

Seems that much of what Susannah says goes a bit over your head. Her discussion about sex with Prince is a perfect example. Your interpretation was that she said it was nothing special, which is NOT what she stated at all. She was explaining to Toure that who he portrayed in his songs or on stage - his musical/sexual mystique persona - was different from the man he was in bed.

*

Again, it seems that Devin is a nice woman who had sex with Prince for a short period of time. Sorry, but I don't see any indication that it was any more serious, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, I think it's ridiculous to make it into something more than that.

[Edited 1/10/19 19:53pm]

Well she said in the interview that Prince would call her up to get her opinion about different things and that Jerome told her that she "kept it real" and that Prince liked that about her. I wasn't aware that they were keeping in touch through the early 90's until she mentioned that on a Peri of hers before he passed. She did one the day of and she appeared to be very upset and was crying so she did seem to genuinely care for him. From what she said,it seems they realized they were better friends than lovers. I wonder if they kept in touch through the years or if they lost contact with one another. I suppose she mentions that in the book.

My take on Jerome telling her she always "kept it real" was that she knew what the deal was and she just rolled with it. I understand her being upset after Prince passed. Knowing and having any kind of relationship with him - physical or otherwise - would leave a lasting impression.

I never said he did. What I wrote, per the interview that I read with her, was that after arriving at the Playboy mansion, she received a message that Prince wanted call her after his show. She stated he called her after his concert. * I find it very interesting that, in your opinion, Susannah has "selective memory" or is embellishing her time and relationship with Prince and yet with Devin D - someone who, comparably speaking, spent much less time with Prince - you seem to take every word she's written or said as "gospel". Makes no sense to me really. [Edited 1/10/19 18:34pm]

Susannah said Prince acted like a “petulant child”. HA! He was young, virile, rich, handsome, and powerful, but he’s going through life PETULANT?? Based on that alone I question everything Susannah now says. And I was *there* back then, and “I had to get engaged” just like “I had to get married” had a certain meaning. And at times, boyfriend was just duped. I guess one has to read the stories and see what rings true to them. I take what Prince said about his songs being not about anyone in the flesh as truth.

Actually what I wonder about is why a man who has found “the love of his life” is willing to risk losing her by befriending and then making love to not one but two other women! And I think he took Vanity to PR premier in July ‘84 (same month he started tracking NC2U), why didn’t he take the love of his life to the biggest night of his life so far? He called Devin right after he won the Oscar so she was clearly on his mind then but maybe the “love of his life” Susannah was busy darning his socks so he slipped away!

Ah, but he didn't leave her for long, did he?? He came back AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN. Read the lyrics to Forever In My Life and then maybe you'll start to get it biggrin

Another thought to ponder, muchtoofast - if Susannah was such an insignificant person in Prince's life - a la no more important to him than Devin D - then why was/is she sought after for Biogrpahies and Interviews by journalitss, writers and Prince historians? I don't recall seeing any quotes from Devin D in any of the Biographies. Oh wait, that's right....she did appear on the Howard Stern show in 2002 to discuss her secret sexcapades with Prince lol

Same reason Mayte isn’t. But then again actually BEING married to him and having his only child isn’t nearly as important as NC2U.

? What ? You act like the fact that he kept coming back again, and again, and again, is a good thing........ Are you kidding me? Susannah and Devin wasn't the only women he was seeing at the time.

How humiliating for Susannah, makes you wonder why she kept sticking around and letting him come back again, and again, and again. sad

Low self-esteem.

It was much more than him "coming back around again". Regardless of his womanizing ways - of which Devin was clearly a part - he didn't want to lose Susannah. There is lyrical, written and verbal proof of this throughout the years. Oh, and a SIX carat ring, the planning of a house, the song In This Bed I Scream, and on and on.
*
You, like many, seem to be equating physical attraction and sex with love, which is unfortunate. Go back and read the lyrics to Condition of the Heart, which he recorded in Oct '84, Temptation and Tamborine, which he recorded December of '84 - right around the time he met Devin D. Hmmmm. He was clearly torn between the temptations of sex and feelings of love.
*
It's all in the music during that time If you would take the time to really listen to it. During the PR shows He literally started adding the song Temptation and a conversation with God about how he promises to try to be "good" and he understands that love is more important than sex. He literally played out his life through his music.
*
Again, Devin claims his song inspired by her is Bedtime Story. I think that makes sense based on the lyrics.

Tambourine tracking in Sept 84, Temptation tracking Dec 6, 84 of a band version that had been scrapped earlier. He and Devin first met Dec 11, 84 and didn’t have sex for months but you continue on with your dumb ho fantasy.

And gee, imagine that, a singer/songwriter writes a song then actually sings it. What are the chances??

Low self-esteem.

not always that simple.

Mothers who put up with the childrens mess over and over, isn't because of Self Esteem, it's because of love, and the murky area of how to let go while loving.

I don't think Vanity continued with Prince for a few years was because of Low self esteem

I don't think Devin continued even in the short period because of self esteem issues

the pheramones and vapors can be hard to disperse. People can become 'addicted' to the drama of a relationship.

Right, and no doubt Devin's pictorials were not the first ones he looked at in order to come up with Tamorine or Temptation, nor would they be the last. It is interesting though how he added the dialogue with God, and also worked further on Tamborine on December 24th, '84....which I believe was only a week or so before he decided to fly Devin D to another PR show - I believe she stated it was one of the Dallas TX shows.

*

Again, it has been stated numerous times by many who were close to Prince that the music that he wrote and recorded was directly inspired by events happening in that moment. Susannah discusses it in the interview - "what are we doing in this moment that will inspire the music?" Hell, Devin D herself even speaks to it when she talks about Prince writing IIWYG for Susannah. How much more evidence do you need to accept the fact that this is how he wrote his songs??

*

I have never stated that I think Devin D was a "ho". There were many many women, especially during that time, who were "hooking up" with Prince. I just think it's very naive to think that she was any more special than the others who were doing the same thing with him.

*

If you prefer to continue with your image of her being such an important and special part of Princes' life that is certainly your perogative. I just have not seen anything pertinent to show that.

Exactly OF4S. No doubt by some point in '87-'88 she knew that a long-term relationship with Prince was not sustainable, and she was moving on. However, as she stated, they shared a deep connection, and not one just based on sex.

*

I believe at some point in '91-'92 she became serious with John Cusack and they were living together, which would explain her having to give Prince directions to her place when he called to ask to see her in '93.

I don’t think anything that’s been brought up here qualifies us to say that Prince never loved Devin.

Yes, of course, one relationship can be very different from another. The reason I’m noting Devin again on this thread is that, IMO, we can’t know based on what’s been discussed here.

Yes,she mentioned in the interview that she met her when they were on Star Search and that she introduced her to Prince. She said she invited Cat to a get together at the house he was renting at the time and his father was also there. After cooking dinner for everyone, she said they all went out dancing where Prince danced with Cat for the first time. She said the next thing she knew, she ws in the band and off to Minneapolis to begin rehearsals.

I actually think she was being very diplomatic in her discussion on how difficult he could be at times. Considering the amount of time that she was with him I can only imagine that there are many more instances of that behavior. As she said, she's surprised they both were able to navigate through it as long as they did.

*

I am going to track down DMSR. I haven't read that one, and I know it's one of the best. Matt Thorne's "Prince, The Man and His Music" was good too - he used DMSR as a source throughout the book, and added some new information too.

She was explaining to Toure that who he portrayed in his songs or on stage - his musical/sexual mystique persona - was different from the man he was in bed.

Again, it seems that Devin is a nice woman who had sex with Prince for a short period of time. Sorry, but I don't see any indication that it was any more serious, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, I think it's ridiculous to make it into something more than that.

[Edited 1/11/19 7:13am]

I've never heard anything about Prince taking Vanity to the PR premiere, so you'll have o provide a valid source for that piece of information.

Regarding the call to Devin D after winning the Oscar - good to know, but a phone call is somehow supposed to reflect his strong feelings for her?? I would bet he called many people that night. I'm pretty sure Susannah was back on stage at the PR shows by this point. Here's a pic of her on stage in Prince's outfit - the one he wore at the Grammy's:

I know OF4S has more pics of her on stage at other shows too. OldFriends - bring 'em on!!

There is also a bootleg rehearsal tape - I believe it may have been for the last show in Miami, April '85 - with Susannah singing backround vocals with the band. So again, I would say that Susannah physically being with Prince during that time would trump a phone call for sure.

Yes,that kind of behavior was unacceptable and she said she knew there was something there that wasn't right and realized he had a temper.,She said that the movie was stressing him out and that he wanted to be finished with it. Wish I still had the book to see what exactly she said but I recall her saying they had a terrible night and he was laying on the floor, saying that he hated it. It put a vivid picture in my mind of what living with him was like at times and that it wasn't always easy. I remember in the interview with Tavis Smiley he did in 2009,he admitted to still having a mean side and said it would come out at times.

I actually think she was being very diplomatic in her discussion on how difficult he could be at times. Considering the amount of time that she was with him I can only imagine that there are many more instances of that behavior. As she said, she's surprised they both were able to navigate through it as long as they did.

I am going to track down DMSR. I haven't read that one, and I know it's one of the best. Matt Thorne's "Prince, The Man and His Music" was good too - he used DMSR as a source throughout the book, and added some new information too.

Yes,I agree. I'm sure that it was very difficult. DMSR is a great look at Prince in the first decade. I read it a few times and I found myself using it as a reference for his music. I liked that every song he had written up to that point was listed as well. I unfortunately lost my books due to a water leak a few years ago and didn't replace them. I'll have to look it up on Amazon and see what it's going for now. I've heard the book by Matt Thorne is very good!

Another pic of Susannah on stage during the PR tour - on the right next to Wendy and she's wearing one of Prince's outfits...

You would like Matt Thorne's book for sure then. He covers all of Prince's music - from beginning up through I think 2013-14. The information about the music is fantastic. It's less about his personal life and more about the music, but he does cover a bit of the personal side.

It definitely sounds like my kind of book. I'll check it out for sure!

She was friends with Cat too right, by that time she was just friends with Prince in 87

Yes, Cat has talked about the night she first met Prince in other interviews. It's also interesting that this would have been the same time that Prince was sitting out in front of Susannah's house with his bodyguard Gilbert talking to Susannah and trying to convince her to go up and talk to Prince in his limo, and Prince asking her to go back to MN with him.

*

Also, Cat's peach dress was originally made for Susannah. It fit Cat, so she wore it for the promo photos and on the tour. Peach and black was Susannah's favorite color combo at the time. Prince had a peach guitar made, and the colors for the tour were peach and black...."color you peach and black, color me taken aback. Crucial, I think I want ya..."

Hmm. Interesting. Now I didn't know that about Cat's dress. I had heard about Susannah's fave colors being peach and black and that being the reasoning behind Prince choosing them as the colors for the tour. I love how he slipped "Crucial" into the lyrics of "U Got The Look"

Oh yes, so many lyrical words repeated during that time - the song Crucial, the word crucial in both Adore and U Got The Look,

Cat Glover talking about SOTT cover:

*

The "Sign o' the Times" single cover...that was when Prince actually asked me to join his band. I had no idea what was going on. He asked me to go by his house in Beverly Hills and pick up a dress. I flew to Minneapolis the next day and I had no idea that was the dress I was supposed to wear. But, that dress was supposed to be for Susannah Melvoin, Wendy's twin sister. It just so happened I fit the dress. I came to find out that was the dress he wanted me to wear for the cover and he didn't let me know what it was for.

*

Would be really interesting to know whether or not Susannah was going to do the record cover or if she was going to be on stage for SOTT before she left MN.

OF4S - Is that really one of Prince's Parade tour jackets?? It would make sense, because the shades of white are different for the jacket and the skirt. If that's true it's very cool!
