I was too for the same reason. I've always felt that it was written about a deeper and more meaningful relationship. She said that it was her favorite song and her reason for thinking that it was for her, was because it was written around the time her Playboy issue came out and she thought the line "in a word you were sex" was referring to that. She said Prince would always contact Playboy when he wanted to speak with her, even after she had gotten married. She also mentioned Susannah and said "If I Was Your Girlfriend" was written due to Prince's desire to be as close to her as she was to Wendy and that he envied their relationship. I had read that as well. Before that, she said Prince's music was his autobiography and that with any time period in his music, you can tell what was happening in his life and what girl he was with and where he was at that particular time. I'm not sure that it was always that cut and dried because he would pull pull older songs out and remake them but I suppose that was probably the case back then. That's a good point about Adore being similar in theme to FIML.

LOL Prince did NOT use Playboy as a middleman when he wanted to speak with Devin. READ HER BOOK or continue looking like a crazed Susannah fanatic. lol

Devin said in the interview shared by rednblue that when Prince wanted to speak to her he would call the Playboy offices and they would tell her that Prince was trying to reach her. I assume this was after they had lost contact with each other. I would think he called her directly while they were dating. I actually am thinking about reading her book but I wish I'd taken advantage of her 99 cent over when it first came out. It's nearly 30 dollars now.

It’s an interesting read. You’ll find the *slut shaming* going on here about her is completely unwarranted. CLUE: you don’t have to degrade one woman to raise up another. And isn’t her ebook just 10 bucks?

Yes, I just checked, 10 bucks.

She said in the interview that Prince told her he didn't want her to see his "bad side" and that was his way of breaking it off. She commented that Carmen said there was always one girl leaving Minnie and another coming in. I believe Mayte said the same iirc. Devin said that was the way it was with her as well but that Prince knew she didn't want to live there and preferred LA and that he didn't like that. She seemed to be suggesting that he wanted a more exclusive relationship but she wouldn't go along with what he wanted. I had read about her in passing but I hadn't heard much about their relationship and she wasn't mentioned in the biographies I've read, that I recall.

That may be her perception of it, but I seriously doubt he wanted her to move to MN. It's been said that he did not have much respect for women who went the Playboy route - good for sex, but I doubt he took them seriously. Also, she was not involved with music in any way, so there would have been very little for her to do in MN. At least Tara (aka Carmen) and Anna Garcia were trying for the singer/performer route, so they had something to connect with and contribute to his musical world - however trivial.

*

The fashion models, playboy models, club dancers were a dime a dozen. There was always a new "flavor" coming onto the scene. I think Prince also needed mental stimulation - someone to challenge him and show him things related to his world. I think Susannah did that for him.

*

It brings to mind the song 101 - especially the bolded lyric, which was recorded the same month as Come Home :

*

Why do I cry for you?
You probably found someone new
And no one deserves ya, I say
No one deserves ya like I do
Baby, you know it's true
Ooh, what we had you said was meant to be

If that was true, tell me, why'd you leave?
Baby, I wanna know
I'm sick of, I'm sick of, I'm sick of
Crying these tears in vain, baby

Why don't cha get in a taxi, subway train?
I'm going mad, baby
I'm going insane, baby, don't cha know?
101 just won't do, no, no, listen

Nothing on TV, my girlfriends bore me
They try to please me but I need you, baby
You and me, need to be together
Together physically
Why can't you come see about me?

Yes,she said that he didn't like that she was in Playboy and that he wanted to try to find a way to fit her into his world like he did with some of the other girls but she didn't want to go along with it and he jokingly said that maybe they could make her a roadie. She mentioned that Steve Fargnoli was also her manager at the time and she thought they were grooming her to be in one of Prince's movies. Yes,those lyrics sum up how he felt about some of the girls he was seeing then and that he was missing a more fulfilling relationship.

Oh that brings to mind something Jill Jones stated when she was interviewed on Prince Podcast. She was talking about how mad she was about her role in GB being majorly reduced, and she had a major attitude on set. Prince held up a picture of an ex-girlfriend and said if she didn't get a better attitude she would be replaced by her. Would be funny if that chick were Devin D biggrin

I checked her site to see if I could buy it from her direct but it wasn't available with her other books. As I said earlier in the thread,I like Devin and I was regularly watching her Peris in 2015 and '16. From what she said, she and Prince had a cool, laid back relationship and they mutually agreed they were better as friends.

Here is the interview I shared. If it's causing upset, it's my fault for putting it on this thread. However, maybe having it right here (at the point of possible upset) will be helpful, as people can just click here to see what she says in the context of the interview.

Yes,It's not a stretch to think that he may hae been thinking of his relationship with Susannah while writing some of the lyrics. I had heard about him revealing that "Adore" was written for her at the sound check but I never heard him actually say it. I thought it was interesting that Devin said in the interview that was shared, she thought it was written for her. I can see with different women around how there was some confusion.

I am surprised that Devin D would have thought that Adore was inspired by her - given the fact that she was someone he saw on the side. The lyric, "they know I ain't cheatin' on ya, they know this is serious, I ain't f**ckin' just for kicks"- would not apply to her, as he actually was cheating with her. Also, he uses that familiar lyric of "nothing could compare..". Adore and FIML were written in the same time period, and the lyric/message is very similar.

I was too for the same reason. I've always felt that it was written about a deeper and more meaningful relationship. She said that it was her favorite song and her reason for thinking that it was for her, was because it was written around the time her Playboy issue came out and she thought the line "in a word you were sex" was referring to that. I find it very interesting that, in your opinion, Susannah has "selective memory" or is embellishing her time and relationship with Prince and yet with Devin D - someone who, comparably speaking, spent much less time with Prince - you seem to take every word she's written or said as "gospel". Makes no sense to me really.

I really enjoyed Susannah's stories. It's kinda embarrassing to admit, but I didn't follow what she said Prince did when they were snorkeling, and Prince called her over to check something out. I've been eagerly anticipating this story, as Susannah mentioned, on a Facebook chat session, that she might share it soon.

Then, I get my big chance to hear it, and I can't follow it. lol Anyone out there who's willing to enlighten a slow person?

Susannah said Prince acted like a “petulant child”. HA! He was young, virile, rich, handsome, and powerful, but he’s going through life PETULANT??

Based on that alone I question everything Susannah now says. And I was *there* back then, and “I had to get engaged” just like “I had to get married” had a certain meaning. And at times, boyfriend was just duped.

I guess one has to read the stories and see what rings true to them. I take what Prince said about his songs being not about anyone in the flesh as truth.

NO. What Susannah said was that they lost touch for awhile while he was BEING A ROCK STAR - petulant and needy, getting any girl that he wanted. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any big name rock star, especially back then, who did not fit that description, at least for a period of time. Certainly, Prince was no exception back then as he suddenly found himself with the number one song, album and film in one year.

*

Hmmm, Prince telling Devin - and by the way he did actually tell Jill Jones the same thing, because she states it on her interview with Prince Podcast (take a listen!)- that he "had to get married" - yeah, one can only wonder why he would say that to the chicks he was screwing on the side?? Come on!! It really can't be more obvious, and it's clear they were either completely gullible and naive, or were in denial. Sorry, but Prince didn't have to do anything he didn't want to do at that time. He clearly didn't want to lose Susannah, period.

*

Seems that much of what Susannah says goes a bit over your head. Her discussion about sex with Prince is a perfect example. Your interpretation was that she said it was nothing special, which is NOT what she stated at all. She was explaining to Toure that who he portrayed in his songs or on stage - his musical/sexual mystique persona - was different from the man he was in bed.

*

Again, it seems that Devin is a nice woman who had sex with Prince for a short period of time. Sorry, but I don't see any indication that it was any more serious, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, I think it's ridiculous to make it into something more than that.

I wish she had too. One of the other reasons she gave was because he wrote the song after her issue of Playboy came out so I guess she thought the timing lined up as well. She also mentioned that he would call her up and "court" her on the phone so maybe she related to that part of the lyrics too,I dunno. I'm interested in what all she said in her book. I don't think she has given many interviews about the book and the one rednblue shared may be the only one. I did like that she said she was donating a part of the proceeds to Yes We Code.

Yes, I think it's great that she is donating some of any profit to Yes We Code. I think the timing of her Playboy spread and when Prince wrote the song is complete coincidence. The phone "courting" seems to have been Prince's m/o with just about every girl. In Vanity's book she talked about him calling her after midnight when they had just met and they talked until the sun came up, which is why many Vanity fans think the song was written for her. Prince may very well have called Susannah the night that he met her or shortly after - it's not like he didn't know the number!

*

To me, the most poignant lyric in the song is "you own my heart and mind, I truly adore you, if God one day struck me blind you're beauty I'd still see..." I think what he is expressing here is that he is in love with the woman's inner beauty - not her physical beauty, so if he were to go blind it wouldn't matter, because it's what she has inside that he loves the most. Susannah was very attractive, but she was not a fashion or playboy model type, so in that way she was very different than his typical type. It was a deeper connection.

Yeah,it seems he was still continuing that through his life from what others have said and I've read where others think he wrote it about Vanity because of that line as well. Yes,the lyrics are some of the most beautiful and profound that he has written imo and I agree that he was talking about her inner beauty as well as physical.

I never said he did. What I wrote, per the interview that I read with her, was that after arriving at the Playboy mansion, she received a message that Prince wanted call her after his show. She stated he called her after his concert. * I find it very interesting that, in your opinion, Susannah has "selective memory" or is embellishing her time and relationship with Prince and yet with Devin D - someone who, comparably speaking, spent much less time with Prince - you seem to take every word she's written or said as "gospel". Makes no sense to me really. [Edited 1/10/19 18:34pm]

Well she said in the interview that Prince would call her up to get her opinion about different things and that Jerome told her that she "kept it real" and that Prince liked that about her. I wasn't aware that they were keeping in touch through the early 90's until she mentioned that on a Peri of hers before he passed. She did one the day of and she appeared to be very upset and was crying so she did seem to genuinely care for him. From what she said,it seems they realized they were better friends than lovers. I wonder if they kept in touch through the years or if they lost contact with one another. I suppose she mentions that in the book.

Sorry, but you've got the timing all wrong here. Alan Light's book was on the making of the Purple Rain movie and the PR tour - 1983-1984. Prince's new house was almost 2 years away from being built. So, she was referring to the Spring/Summer of '84. Oh, and have you read or seen many interviews with people who really knew Prince - not just the chicks he was trying to seduce? They've ALL discussed his "petulant" side, so Susannah was far from alone there.

I recall reading in DMSR that Prince was unhappy with the way things were going with Under The Cherry Moon and Susannah said that he stayed up all night talking about how much he hated the movie. Per Nilsen wrote that someone stopped by the house, can't remember who exactly but I think it was either Peggy or Susan and Susannah told them what a horrible night they had. She may have been thinking of times such as that when describing him that way.

Ah you could be right. He was sweet as pie when he told her he was flying off AGAIN to meet one of his other girlfriends. Why be petulant when you can just leave? lol

OF4S, no he was not. If I find the video when I get home I’ll try to post it here. That was an honest reaction.

They did the same thing when talking about Adore

In this Live Chat, it's clear to see that St Paul was legitimately surprised and not being sarcastic when she said the song was about her. While searching for the video of the Live Chat, I came across an interview she'd done not too long ago where she was speaking about FDeluxe. There was a question regarding NC2U and Susannah herself wasn't always so confident or solid in thinking the song was about her, so I'm not surprised by St Paul's reaction.

Here's a piece of the interview

Do you have a favorite track? '

Susannah "Yes, Nothing Compares 2 U"

It's always been rumored that Prince wrote the song Nothing a compares 2U for you.

Susannah "Maybe.... Yeah, but you know, it's no like he said: Babe, I wrote this song for you, (laughs) "

The interview you are referring to is also during the time that she and Prince were not speaking. I seriously doubt she wanted to "declare" in print that a song was written specifically for her, especially at that time. Again, he publicly stated that FIML was written for her, so it's certainly not a stretch that she would have been the subject of NC2U.
*
She said the exact same thing when discussing Adore on the FB video stream. She stated, "he did not say Susannah, this song is for you. He came upstairs to get me, brought me downstairs and played me the song. I was the first one to hear it."

Another thought to ponder, muchtoofast - if Susannah was such an insignificant person in Prince's life - a la no more important to him than Devin D - then why was/is she sought after for Biogrpahies and Interviews by journalitss, writers and Prince historians? I don't recall seeing any quotes from Devin D in any of the Biographies. Oh wait, that's right....she did appear on the Howard Stern show in 2002 to discuss her secret sexcapades with Prince lol
