he did not try to be funny, he just tried to make her feel good and she felt comfortable. her story moved me to tears and she had honest tears in her eyes as well.

Just saw it - by coincidence. I was just talking to someone about Prince while the TV was on mute and I look up and she's there. Last thing I heard was that Germany had been canceled. Very eerie.

The comedian tried too hard, I guess it depends on how you view it. I didn't find it good. Maybe they've been nervous.

I thought it was London that was cancelled due to the snow and flight cancellations?

Who said Germany was cancelled?

Don't know, how's your german? wink Better than mine, I hope.

You know, for all that some folks like to diss Mayte (I haven't read her book, so not sure if its contents are why some folks seem so irked), she was his first wife after all. She was also clearly greatly loved by Prince, and had a baby with him. Moreover, I think she did inspire Prince to write some really good songs during that period.

Perhaps most significantly to me she gave him a few years of happiness, which is a sight more than any of us here can lay claim too. Whatever folks may say, they can't take that away from her, as the song goes.

Mayte has said several times throughout the years that she speaks several languages, German being one of them. If that's that case, why couldn't she conduct this interview or even speak some non-rehearsed phrases in German during this interview? All she did was nodding as if she knew what the interviewer was saying...I can do that should I appear in a TV show for some reason in Burundi or Papua New Guinea or wherever the hell because I would know why I'm there and what the subject matter is.
It was quite funny watching her while the German/Turkish guy was talking about Trump, Putin and Erdogan as if she had any clue.

I'm not trying to be critical just for the sake of it. If you say you speak the language, then speak it. There's a big difference in understanding bits and pieces and actually knowing the language, let alone being fluent.
As far as Mayte understanding the interview, maybe she did understand when it was about her and Prince because she knew what Markus was going to say, he went through her career, her romantic relationship with Prince, the death of their child etc.
She clearly didn't understand when the topics were not about her. That was pretty obvious.
My post wasn't and isn't an effort to bash Mayte. However, if you're going around saying you speak several languages but when it's time to deliver and you're basically mute, well, oops.

Her own website said 3 weeks ago that the Hamburg dance class date was canceled. Lanz' show is in Hamburg as well, that's why I was surprised to see her there.

She does not speak German. I'd always drop in some German phrases in convos, general phrases that she would know from her time here. But she always went silent after that.

And I agree with what you say, she does not understand what the others on the show talk about. Non-native Germans all have a hard time to understand and learn the language. Everyone who comes here and learns the language talks about that. Even people who have lived here for years. It not just the grammar but German is a very old language and with our history and Germany's different kingdoms, dukedoms, electorats, all those districts, there is not one German. The different districts all developed their own dialects, some of which cannot even be understood by natives of other districts.

Some phrases and expressions are general though and when you lived here as a kid - which she did - you naturally pick them up.

She understood Lanz because he read her book and quoted direct excerpts to her in his questions. It's what he does on his show, he is always well prepared and he does not ask the guests any questions that they didn't talk about before. He does not "call out" his guests. He is politically correct and supported (some say corrupted) by a certain German party. The average Joe here don't like Lanz because his show is not real but controlled by certain people. It's the only Late show on public TV and if someone wants to promote something, they will go on Lanz.

Who cares how good her German is?! shrug

Seriously, I couldn't give a rat's ass how fluent or not she may be in German.

Once it became clear they were conversing in German, I didn't even bother watching the interview, as there's no point. I probably wouldn't understand a word of it nowadays.

Leider ist mein Deutsch sehr schlecht. Ich habe in der schule Deutsch vor vielen Jahre gelernt.

Oh no! omfg That's very probably completely wrong....so drag me out the back and shoot me. missile

In any case, unless you are genuinely fluent in a language, it's usually a case of use it or lose it. That's my experience with French, that's for sure.

I went on vacation in wonderful, gay Paris in my late teens and conversed fairly easily (I mean by that not fluent at all, but able to think in English, translate in my mind to French and express myself).

I went back to spend almost a month travelling around la belle france a decade later, and, though it was a lot more of a struggle, was pleasantly surprised I managed to get by. Many years later, I can't even watch a French movie without reading the subtitles. I can barely understand a word (albeit admittedly my memory is pretty pathetic...my wife blames my sugar addiction).

I'm not a big fan of Mayte by any stretch of the imagination (never read her book or watched her TV show), but she seems harmless enough to me. I met her once very briefly many years ago, and she was perfectly polite, patient and pleasant.

She seems to me to get more than her fair share of flak on the boards sometimes. Some of the negativity the associates receive gets a bit grating on the nerves. The way I see it, some folks are thinking the very worst, others are thinking the best, and the truth invariably lies somewhere in between.

They translated everything, because at one point the german/turkish comedian told her a joke and they translated it. They didn't even ask her if she can speak some german, that's why she didn't say anything in german. Her Interview was still good and I don't need to hear her speaking german.

I enjoyed the interview.I found it interesting what she said about him seemingly not being as religious as before referring to his interest in the third eye and the JW's not allowing that. Also that she had attended one of his shows a few years back and afterward she sensed that he was in the room without anyone telling her he was there and that he left before she could talk to him.Mayte's audio was a bit low for me but it sounded like that's what she said.

What I remember reading in 2016 is that she showed up at a small venue he was supposed to play at and he showed up too, and before they could see each other, he left. This could have been a different time.

Translation:

MAYTE (After the video compilation): I still get emotional about that, because that Song, it's just crazy.

MARKUS: Why?

MAYTE: 'Cause it's still hard to believe that he's gone and it's almost April, it's anniversary of his passing. I think we lived a life of coincidence of fate. And I believe it's fate and it's happening again.

MARKUS: So you believe it's fate that you met him? 'Cause when I read your book, a 16 year old meets that mega star and he invites her to his home, suddenly your at this house, living there. But you discribe him as very respectful, there was nothing sexual going on, this man just loved to spent time with you. How or where did you meet?

MAYTE: I saw his concert in spain on july 25th, I know that because he proposed to me years later on that date, while I was in spain again. That's why I remember this date so correctly. I was 16 but I was protected by my father. As a belly dancer you think about "sexual seduction" but for me, I thought it was a part of myself, I think about a move as a woman, thinking that I can achieve everything when I dance. That was my freedom, that's how I expressed myself. And I think he felt the same with his music, so I think it was that connection between us. There was a connection of our souls. They say there's that "click" when you meet and that's what I felt. Of course I was 16, but he waited, we were friends first I didn't think anything sexual, I didn't think of a relationship, I just thought what a great guy he was.

MARKUS: You're a high profile belly dancer, you won talent shows. The idea was to be part of his world as a dancer. Your mother got this tape to him in Mannheim. What happened next?

MAYTE: She gave that tape to one of his dancers and I met him five minutes later. The security came to my mother and myself and said: "Prince just watched the tape, he'd like to meet you, is that okay?" My mother said "Yes" and he said: "Are you really 16?" I said "Yeah" and my mother said, "go it's okay". It was okay because she knew I'm a professional dancer and that I can handle myself, I just was a trustworthy kid.

MARKUS: And he treated you very decently. You describe this very beautiful in your book how you watched this videos, your dancing tapes again and again and obviously there was this connection between the two of you. What would be interesting is, how was it watching movies with him. Was it like, sitting on the couch at the end of the day, sweatpants and beer, like the rest of us?"

MAYTE: No, no. He had Paisly Park and he had a House. It was recording music and rehearsals and that was pretty much everyday. He loved to watch Basketball, but he never dressed down. He had costume made Pyjamas.

MARKUS: But at the same time you said that you could go shopping in minnesota. It was possible to live a kind of a normal life.

MAYTE: They were used to him there, of course we went shopping at 2 or 5 in the morning, but sometimes fans recoginced us. I had a pink BMW and he had yellow or purple clothes on, so they could see us from the far distance. And he loved it.

MARKUS: You then married and tried to get a baby twice. And there's one scene that's really touching, we're not gonna show it now, but your son was born and died just six days later because of a genetic dissorder and you were at the Oprah Winfrey show and at one point it was like, he was acting like nothing happened, he even showed a children's room even though he knows his son is dead. Why?"

MAYTE: It was our way of uhm. The only way I could get out of bed was him saying "We'll try again". We thought that we can bring this soul back. And I think, instead of hiding it, he wanted people to see what he wanted to be, wich was a father. He made an entire room, a playground at Paisly Park for our child. It made him proud. It was painful, but it was also, I mean we had faith and hope, that's a big word for me, hope.

MARKUS: And then you got pregnant again and had miscarriage, how did it affect the relationship and him as an artist?

MAYTE: Well uhm, after the loss of our first child he wrote this acoustic album and there's this one song called "come back". It was interesting because I remember I woke up one morning and said to him "I can smell him, I can smell the baby." And there's this line in the song: "I knew this sweet wind was you", so I knew he used this for the song. Recently, no actually a year ago I watched this movie "colleteral beauty" with Will Smith where he lost a child. And he's talking to a woman and this woman said: "You are part of the 79% that break up after the loss of a child." 79% of the couples break up after losing a child. When it happens, there's now guide book on how to react or handle it. I can only speak for myself, and it's a pain I don't wish on anyone, not even my biggest enemy. But how he felt? I can't tell. But I know it affected him, I truly believe it changed his music.

MARKUS: So he never talked about it, he used his music to cope with it?

MAYTE: Yes. He's that type of guy who's not looking back. Being with him for ten years I know that's how he dealt with it. He's not looking back.

MARKUS: You broke up, he married again, and became a Jehovas Witness because he tried to deal with it in a spiritual way too. You adopted a child if I remember correctly, living in Las Vegas. Did you have contact with your ex husband? Did you see each other in the last few years? Did you know about his abuse of prescription pills?

MAYTE: I heard some things over the years, but it was never something that I was concerned of. When he got into the relgion, I didn't want to get involved. The third eye situation. You can't be a Jehova Witness and believe in the third eye. I went to a concert a year before he passed and he was there. I could feel it when he walked into the room, they didn't have to tell me, I felt it. And then he left and I felt, "okay, something's going on here". When the plain went down (On April 15, not a year before, they translated it wrong) and they took him off, I though "I have to see him". Back in January I heard that he's not doing well, I didn't know what it was, but I called. And I said "I'm coming", but then they back peddled, so that I can't say "He said this or she said that".

MARKUS: My last question would be, what are you doing today?

MAYTE: My daughter is the angel of my life, she's my everything. I try to live in every moment, 'cause it can be over so fast. And also, you know, honoring Prince for the rest of my life. He's part of my family for the rest of my life.

This is my first translation ever so please don't be too hard on me guys, I tried my best lol
