Is Morris Day & The Time DOA?

neutral Many claim that Morris Day & The Time is nothing more than an "80's jukebox" as they refuse to play any new material. As more original members jump ship, will The Time just keep rehashing the same 80's hits show over and over or will they give the fans what they want? Or is the same old setlist really what the fans want? You decide.

I won't say Morris Day & The Time are DOA because the show is still very good but if you've seen them twice already you don't need to see them again, it's more for nostaglia than for diehards at this point. The Original 7ven on the other hand are in the morgue.

The article fails to note that Morris Day and the Time have continued to play gigs the whole time the 07 project was going on so its not liked they stopped one and started back up on the other one. Also the routinely play Pandemonium, Chocolate and Sometimes I get lonely at their gigs and just dropped Skillet after 6 years in the setlist for a new intro. Sure us die hards would like to see some other songs in the setlist but all the casual fan wants to hear is Jungle Love and the Bird so they are gonna keep playing it.

It's not like they have a lot of songs to choose from like The Rolling Stones or something. Morris can add more songs from his solo albums, but some of those are probably not as well known to a general audience.

For 65 years straight, the #1 genre in music, selling wise, was rock n' roll worldwide. Last year (2017) in June, it got de-crowned by hip hop. Hip hop is the #1 genre. It's hip hop - rock - country - pop or pop - country. ~ Pras

Loving someone doesn't mean you "like" them. I think they have a great chemistry/camraderie when it's about music but it's falls apart when it moves into other areas. As "The Time" Prince basically handled the business end of things and they could just play music and enjoy the ride. As "The Original 7ven" a lot of stuff they didn't have to deal with as a group set in and it got ugly. As solo acts they can handle their business anyway they see fit but as a group they were at odds on what to do next. The "Morris Day & The Time" line-up is clearly Morris' project and he's grown comfortable with it.

I think people were hoping the material from 'Condensate' would make it into the setlist since the O7 seems to have been disbanded. I'd even pay to see them again if they did some of those 'Corporate World' bootleg tracks at their shows.

It's funny. I was thinking the other day how comical it was that Jesse was demanding royalty statements and the album hadn't even been out but a few weeks or so. That is sooo strange to me. Surely he had to know that none could exist at that point. He quit awfuly early into the promotion process. Based on the O7ven twitter feed, I don't think he is in communication with the other bandmembers and they still blame him for sabotaging the comeback. It remains my opinion that Jesse was planning to jump ship all along and was simply using the other bandmembers to jump start his solo interests. Is O7ven DOA? Clearly. Will O6 ever do anything then? It doesn't look like it. Will Morris Day and The Time release a new album? Based on their Myspace pages, I pray we never hear any "timejuice". Will Prince and Morris ever record together again? I think so, for better or worse.

When it comes to making music together the fellas are on top. When it comes to business and management however, perhaps group personalities and egos took over and failed this project.

I still think that the guys should have simply replaced Jesse and kept it moving.Jesse is great but he's not irreplaceable. In any case,I'm just happy that we got a kickass CD from them.

They probably needed an outside manager instead of Terry doing it. Since the group members said that Terry was the one who really pushed for the reunion, it seems he would have a plan.

they have tried it without prince and it didnt go further than sunshine anderson boring ass career maybe they need 2 fuck the egos and go back 2 prince world they have all grown now and done so much so wit all that knowlege and experience they should know how to conquer anything. they dont need 2 be on a commerical label 2 be sucessful prince has proven that many times over they just need 2 get a good street team 2 help market and get them out there.far as jesse concerned leave his ass in the dust if he dont wanna do the time anymore shit replace him with dez dickerson or one of the dudes in the time. use the internet for promo release some rehearsal jams on youtube let people know they still know what time it is

You would have to go deep into Prince's back-catalog to find anything in terms of quality, that's competitive with Condensate. The fact that they didn't stay together and promote the album doesn't make Andy Allo funky or make "2010" sound any better. biggrin

Exactly... Prince has his own problems and they are completely indefensible. You never should have brought him up in this thread. With fams like you, Prince doesn't need enemies.

Well, some folks just have to start mess and negativity. So of course they're going to bring up things that have nothing to do with anything. I'm not sure how Prince relates to the topic, there's another section for him.

I haven't seen the official stadium feed of this posted on the org, but it's fun to watch in HD. It's from earlier this year about an hour before Morris Day and The Time's show in Warren, MI.

Its all NOSTAGLIA at this point, theres nothing new at all, alot of the members are gone, regardless if the shows are good or not its not really relevant. Its similar to what CHICAGO has been for over a decade, although they still have a few originals and the lead singer has been there since 1985, they havent had a new record in ages and when they did they played nothing from it. TO me if you have a new record you tour it, and PLAY IT some of it, this is what PRINCE's major issue is and has been for awhile hes become a jukebox of hits and nothing more, even when he has a new record out and rarely plays a song from it. NOW i get the whole Nostaglia thing for fans and they want to hear this and that, but alot wanna hear something new especially when they buy the new record.

THE TIME arre done, plain and simple, its really Morris and who he gets backing him at this point.

Rhastus, whassup, Homie. Yea that article has lots of errors in it.

I was fortunate to see the O-7 in LAX before Jesse left. I think it was the last show they did together.

Nobody can replace Jerome. Sly really doesn't even try. Morris and Sly do a number of routines diefferent than he did with Jerome. I've come to kind of like Sly though. To me he is like the living embodiment of Ned Beatty's character in Superman: the little fat man in the baggy suit with the pork pie hat on. Sly fucks up a lot. Morris has to constantly correct him. That was what I liked a lot about Jerome and Morris live. Jerome would ramdomly screw up something and Morris would get pissed and start capping on him. JB was a much better dancer and he brings a certain star power of his own to shows when he participates. But that's the thing. He fell out with Morris some time ago, and decided he would rather work a 9 to 5.

He seems like a nice guy but unless its Jerome, Morris is best left alone up there and just have someone come one stage for the mirror part. But I know, that's just me being selfish.

A bunch of talented musicians certainly, but I guess I believed in their latest project more than they did....still do.

I won't be supporting any nostalgia shows, that's for sure. I'll just play my cd and call it a day.
