Best Sitcom of ALL TIME?

I know for a lot of people this is one of those stupid questions like "What's your favourite song" or "what's your favourite movie". The answer may change depending on your mood at the time.
But for me, it always comes down to a choice of just two. One American, the other British. Seinfeld or Only Fools & Horses. Two absolutely brilliant shows. Genius, really. Seinfeld is, in my opinion, the funniest show to ever come from America. Everything about it is great. From the writing to the performances by both its central cast and the many guest stars they had throughout the years. There were no weak characters on the show, which is very rare. Take Friends, for example. You often see it appear in these best sitcom lists and yet I've never met anyone who likes all 6 main characters. Yet on Seinfeld, you love them all even though they're jerks. Maybe because they're jerks?
Same goes for Only Fools and Horses. No weak characters and it's literally laugh a minute. Not only is it hilarious but it's got heart. Really emotional at times but there's always a great joke around the corner to lighten things up.
So I'm finding it difficult to decide which is best. Right now I'm leaning towards Only Fools... but like I said at the start, that could change depending on the mood I'm in.
Has anyone on the org got any recommendations or would like to give their opinions on best sitcoms of all time?

Ps. Forgive me if some of my post doesn't read well, I'm high off my head on morphine at the moment. razz

I must give an honourable mention to Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. Michael Crawford is a tour de force as Frank Spencer. In literally every episode there's at least 2 or 3 moments where I'm laughing so much that I can't breathe.

Hard to say. So many back in the day. Sitcoms from 2000 until now have been on a decline, I only like 2 live action sitcoms on tv now.

I don't think there's a best, but the ones I rate most highly (in the order they spring to mind, not in order of preference) are:

Blackadder

Father Ted

Cheers

Frasier

The I.T. Crowd

The Thick of It

Fawlty Towers

Curb Your Enthusiasm (not really a sitcom I suppose)

My Name Is Earl

Yeah, I love Curb but I'm not sure if you'd call it a sitcom. Whatever it is, it's damn good.
Father Ted, of course. That's another show that has me gasping for breath. Dermot Morgan died the day after filming the last episode. Very sad.

Indeed. The decision to not make any more had already been made, but that kind of ensured it. Like Fawlty Towers, it stopped when it was still great - it didn't suffer the fate of far too many other sitcoms, of staggering on long after they should have wrapped things up.

From an objective standpoint, it's not my favorite, but Seinfeld did situation comedy better than any other show in history.

As a Gen-Xer, I'll break my favorites into decades.

70's: Good Times, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, All In The Family

80's: The Cosby Show, A Different World, Cheers, The Golden Girls,

90's: Seinfeld, The Simpsons, Frasier, Martin, Living Single

00's: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy

Of those, I could say that All In The Family, Good Times, The Cosby Show, Seinfeld and The Simpsons are legit GOAT candidates.

That is a great idea!

70's: MASH, Happy Days, All In The Family

80's: Cheers, Three's Company, Cosby Show

90's: Seinfeld, Friends, Married With Children

00's: Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens, Scrubs

Ok, they're not exactly sitcoms but they were on tv and they were funny as hell. Carol Burnett Show and Dave Chappelle Show.

For me, it's a tie between The Bob Newhart Show and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Although The Dick Van Dyke Show was pretty stellar, too.

"Better off Ted" would have deserved many more episodes! Personally, it would be "Scrubs".
